A very worn and damaged medieval gold quarter noble of Edward III. Most of the coin is illegible, but the letter E at the beginning of the obverse legend allows the ruler to be identified as Edward III. As it is so damaged, it has not been possible to date the coin more closely than to the broad dates of Edward's reign, from 1327 to 1377.

This is a magnificent example of a hammered gold quarter noble (the ferling noble at 1s 8p) of Edward III (1327-77). In this case, the coin is from the fourth coinage of 1351-77. It does not carry the French title of the pre treaty coins. The mint mark of a type 3 cross, further dates this coin to 1356-61. The obverse design is of a shield quartered with the arms of England and France within a tressure of eight arches with lis on cusps of each tressure. The reverse has Ornate floriated cross within a tressure of eight arches; annulet at centre and in each angle of the inner cro…

A gold coin; quarter-noble of Edward III, treaty series (1363-1369). The squashed annulet at the centre of the reverse, and the absence of any symbol above the shield suggests it was minted in Calais. The legend is broken by double saltire stops. For reference see North volume 2, 1245.
