Object type: FINGER RING
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Wiltshire
Workflow stage: Published
A late Roman gold finger ring of unusual type. The hoop, which is broadly oval in profile, is decorated on the outer surface by a series of stepped mouldings, with the appearance of scales or even crude hands. These descend from the shoulder to the bottom of the hoop, five on each side, terminating at the foot with two further steps with grooves which run transverse to the other two sets. The bezel consists of three parallel oval box settings, the outer two of which contain garnets. The central one is empty but perhaps originally contained a pearl; on each corner, this setting is flank…

Fragment of probable Middle or Late Bronze Age gold rectangular strip with two perforations at one end (which comes to a relatively irregular terminal but which appears to have been original rather than broken) and a flat, formal terminal at the other end. The upper side of the strip is decorated with a series of sixteen horizontal, incised lines. The reverse side of the strip is undecorated with some distortion while the upper side is scratched and discoloured in places. The strip is slightly contorted along its length. This ring has been squashed virtually flat so it is difficult to tell what the original section was (ie whether it was more D shaped than it appears now), but the use of the long 'S' in the inscription suggests a 17th century date. Part of the inscription is illegible because if the damage to the ring, but I am fairly sure that the full wording would have been: 'God for ever bless us together'. A similar inscription is recorded by Joan Evans in her book on posy rings of 1930. In this instance the words 'for ever' are missing.
The inscription is preceded by what must be a maker's mar…

A squashed, but complete, Late Medieval gold iconographic finger ring with an inscription on the hoop. The bezel is rectangular and measures 12.04 x 6.48 x 1.29mm. It depicts a seated figure holding a sword to the right with a shield or wheel to the left. The figure wears oblong head-gear, perhaps a crown or top of veil. To either side of the head are keying marks, deeper and cruder than the neat engraving, possibly for an enamel inset. The presence of the possible wheel and the sword suggest the figure may represent St Catherine.
