A fragment of gold of uncertain date or function. Possibly hack gold. Sub-rectangular plan with rounded corners. Wedge-shaped profile, with a thicker edge which thins towards the opposite edge. Both surfaces are undecorated, but each has elongated impressed lines. On one surface are three horizontal lines which begin at the mid-point of the fragment, which corresponds with a slight convex raise in the profile. Perpendicular to this are a series of finer scratches. On the other side the profile is slightly convex. Horizontal to this are a series of similar elongated incised lines which …

Small strip of gold wound around a strip of gold wire. The gold strip on this peice of 'hack' gold is wound around the bars three times. On the opposite side to the start of the strip is a small perforation. The wire inside appears to be bent over on itself 4/5 times. Date c.2350 - 800BC. Length: 12.2mm, Width: 11mm, Thick: 5.1mm, Weight: 4.4g Discussion: This object is similar to other pieces of wrapped gold dated to the Bronze Age GLO-FE959E and SF-D30D10, although this piece is not ribbed and CORN-0E9443 which is plain. This places the object before 1720 and as the o…

An apparently complete sheet-gold object of rectangular shape and with a perforation at the centre of each short end, perhaps of Bronze Age date (2,500-800 BC). The object shows signs of being transversely folded or bent multiple times along its length. Both perforations (c.0.8mm diameter) are made from the same side of the object to its opposite side. The object is perhaps related to gold ornaments/ strips known from the Bronze Age of Southern England. The object measures 57.3mm in length, 6.7mm in max.width (varying along the length by 0.5mm), 0.3mm in thickness and weighs 1.58g.

A small circular disc made from gold foil, possibly of early Anglo-Saxon date. The disc has been stamped on one side with an unclear impression in the centre, including linear motifs but difficult to identify with certainty due to the crumpled condition of the artefact. The design is enclosed by a border of pellets. Only just visible to the naked eye, but clear with the use of a glass, are multiple incised lines running circumferentially around the outer edge of the foil. There is no obvious hook or tab on any part of the edge for suspension or attachment. This disc superficially r…

A gold artefact comprising a rectangular strip decorated with beaded wire. The strip has parallel sides and straight ends, but is slightly distorted and bent out of shape at one end. At one corner is a small additional gold strip, applied to the back of the larger strip but now partly torn away and twisted at a right-angle. This smaller strip is pierced, presumably for attachment. A small lumpy accretion on the adjacent corner may be the remains of a second attachment hole. At the opposite short end of the strip is a seam-like feature where the end of the strip appears to have been de…

Description: A fragment of cut gold possible rod of an uncertain date. The rod is broadly circular and has been hammered flat towards both breaks (narrowing from 6mm thick to 1.75mm thick). One break appears to have been cut and subsequently deliberately hammered flat, the other has been bent upwards at the break and no evidence of cutting is visible. Dimensions: 36.8mm in length, 10.75mm max width, 6mm thick and weighs 15.18 grams Identification: The features of this small fragment, including the cross-section and intentional cut marks are consistent with this being part of a B…

The flower head consists of overlapped broadly oval petals with a central circular motif which has two raised circular punches with central pellets. The tip of one petal is a raised broadly pointed oval with a central pellet, the other has a raised curved central punch. L…

One end of a gold strip broken into two pieces of unknown date. The complete end is squared off with slightly rounded corners. The strip widens gradually and consistantly from 6.0mm at the complete end to 12.9mm at the break. The centre is slightly recessed for some of the strip leaving raised edges but it is otherside undecorated. The strip was apparently rolled up when found but was straighened by the finder. it is now 24.3mm long and 0.3mm thick at the thinnest point (in the centre of the broken edge), 0.9mm thick at the thickest point on the edges. It weighs 1.30 grams in total. …

An undatable worked strip of gold, reminiscent in shape of a medieval strap-end or possibly a pendant Bronze Age in date. One end (the wider, 9.6mm wide) is broken (recent-ish) and the strap then tapers to an end 4.2mm wide with a broken loop (also recent-ish) projecting from it (internal diameter c.2.2mm). The long edges are finished. One face has an indented line flanking the long edges and curving round behind the projecting loop. Measures 32.3mm in length and weighs 1.24g. It is rather dented in places and the finder says it was folded when he found it. He thought it was a piece o…
