The bezel is constructed from gold sheet and is hollow and rectangular, measuring 10.27mm by 10.1mm and 4mm thick, with a sub-rectangular cross section. It is flanked by a pair of small flanges decorated with a ridged pattern of small parallel lines. The stone itself is sub-rectangular and has a heavily abraded surface; this damage in the absence of any mechanical abrasion to the gold suggests geochemical erosion and that the material is amber. Gold, Bronze age, penannular ring, 1150-750 BC. Possibly a cast solid gold ring though some examples have shown that they are gold coated copper alloy cores, such as NMS-183C7E. They are predominantly believed to have been used for personal adornment, such as earrings or nose rings, they have even been suggested as hair ornaments. The bezel is a hexagonal setting for a stone or glass gem that is now missing. The bezel has been slightly crushed distorting the original shape. When complete the ring would have had quite a large internal diameter, perhaps suggesting a glove ring or a large male hand. It is made from gold and the closed nature of the bezel but absence of any evidence for the gem would suggest that this was glass and has broken up and been lost. A ring with a similar bez…
