Gold pendant. A folded and crumpled discoid plate, plain on the back which is the exposed part, but with a series of flattened twisted wire loops of length 3mm passing beneath larger bosses on its display side, the latter features perhaps formed as hemispherical half-beads equipped with channels to permit the passage of the strands. An outer order of conjoined loops is discerned, with an indeterminate continuation of similar motifs on the obscured part of the pendant. A more finely cabled border of thickness 1.1mm ran round the outer edge of the disc, though worn, and is interrupted, p…

A contorted fragment of rod of triangular section; the faces are concave and the flanges formed at their junctions are therefore acute. A moderate double twist at a point where the rod is bent appears to be a deliberate feature, but elsewhere very slight twists are likely to be due to distortion. There are no cut-marks, nor any crushing at the breaks. Maximum dimension (in contorted state) 55 mm; approximate extended length 200 mm; thickness 2.5 – 3.1 mm; weight 14.4 g

Gold reliquary. A lozenge-shaped box of composite construction with rich ornate decoration rendered by an applied combination of fine twisted gold strips and spherical gold granules of two sizes [of diameters 1.5mm and 1mm] attached to a plain but roughly textured plate. The sides of the box are of plain smooth gold sheet and it is closed by a plain sheet metal back plate bordered by a further cabled wire. The back borders appear to have been run along the corners of the rhomboid as single strands from the front, though now absent entirely from one of the four corners. There are three…

Gold metalworking debris or ingot fragment. An irregularly sub-rectangular fragment of cast gold which has been hammered flat, with one slightly concave edge, all other sides are broken with a crystalline appearance. Reported as from the same location as a socketed axe dated to 1000-800 BC. As one of two items of similar date and recovered from the same find spot, this object technically fulfills criteria for a 'hoard' of two or more metal prehistoric objects found together, and is therefore to be submitted to the Treasure process, ref. 2022 T357. Gold or silver gilt, probable pin head. A composite construction comprising a spherical sheet metal globe with elaborate applied decoration of pellets and twisted wires. A spherical knop of diameter 2.5mm appears on top, with a ragged hole of length 2.6mm suggesting the loss of a separate shank formerly passing into the object on the bottom. This might alternatively have received the wire of an ear ring, or some other means of attachment. Upper, medial and lower rows of six smaller [diameter 1mm] applied spheres define two fields, each occupied by six juxtaposed pelta-shaped curls of …

Gold finger ring. A straight-sided strip of sheet metal with a reddish tinge, expanded at a plain bezel whose edges are defined by a double line of rouletted dots, eccentrically angled. A magnified view also reveals traces of a borderline of meandering curls, possibly formed in the same way. A pair of lines of similar dots are carried along either shoulder of the ring, where they flank a series of trefoil or leaf-like stamps; no more than six to each side. Gold bracelet fragment. Cast pentagonal-section strip, broken at one end and flattened to spatulate form at the other. The section is angular, with two low and probably worn facets on what is taken to have been the display or outer face, producing a gently keeled appearance. This is carried along the object to the spatulate end, which may therefore be regarded as a deliberately fashioned terminal to a penannular and probably symmetrical form, with its equivalent now lost. Early-medieval A-bracteate. A disc of beaten gold bearing a low-relief design within a stamped border, and retaining a finely billeted rim, now detached at 3 o'clock and broken at 12 o'clock relative to the design. The object also bears a ragged transverse tear extending from 10 o'clock. The central design is obviously derived from the profile diademed imperial bust appearing on late Roman coinage, though with significant adaptations which are deliberately chosen, rather than simple misconstructions of the design. A first departure from the Roman model is th…
