A fragment of sheet gold from an unidentified artefact of unknown date. This fragment has a weight of 2.29g, it is bent and broken though to what extent is uncertain. The sheet metal has a thickness of 0.4mm, maximum incomplete length of 54.4mm and maximum width of c.15.9mm. The strip of metal varies in width along its length and appears to probably have had a partially curved orientation on the single plane. The metal is bent in all directions and this appears to be the result of damage rather than design. Both ends of the strip have irregular terminals indicative of a break rather t…

A rectanglular fragment of possible hack gold, probably of Early Medieval date, AD 450 - 1066. The fragment is broken at both ends and perhaps along one long edge. The remaining side is complete and is slightly wavy but essentially has square corners. The piece is slightly curved in cross-section. The convex face is marked with deep longitudinal scratches. The concave reverse is smooth except for some scratches and cracks near the broken long edge. It is a deep golden colour and is 11.8mm long, 7.1mm wide and 1.4mm thick. 0.74g.
Normally a fragment of this nature would be considere…

Description: A bent strip of gold wire. The wire ranges from 1.2mm to 1.7mm in diameter and is sub-circular in cross-section with many flat facets, suggesting that the wire was hand-made by hammering. The ends are both half cut on an angle, and half broken. The wire is wider at one end and gradually tapers along the whole length.
Dimensions: The wire is currently bent and twisted, now being 30.9mm long, but if straight would be about 45mm long. It weighs 1.13g.
Discussion: The treatment of the ends (chisel-cut and then broken) is characteristic of Viking-age cutting of metal to …

Treasure reference no. 2013 T706: two fragments of folded sheet gold, found together and presumably once part of the same object. Fragment A is sub-rectangular and appears to have one original edge. Fragment B is also sub-rectangular and has been clearly folded at least four times. The longer edge is original, as appears to be the outer edge, indicating that this was once a flat, rectangular sheet.
The surface is difficult to see owing to the poor state of preservation, but it appears to have had some kind of pressed decoration. In some ways this item resembles Roman lamella.

TREASURE ITEM 2012 T628: Fragment of a gold strip with the longest edge deliberately and neatly folded. The other edges are damaged and are most likely not deliberate. 8mm up from the longest edge is a line of small punched dots such that the folded edge appears on the same side from which the punching has been carried out. There is a small hole in the top right of the piece that is probably not deliberate. A similar gold strip was found in East Lindsey, Lincolnshire PAS ID YORYM-AECC98.
Date: In all likelihood the piece is more than 300 years old. However it is not possible to ass…

An incomplete strip of sheet gold. The sheet is rectangular in plan, around 0.5mm in thickness and decorated with eleven grooves. Treasure reference number 2011 T459.
Similar multi-grooved strips of a Bronze Age date are known from throughout Britain including in the British Museum collection from Flixton, Yorkshire (2004,0904.1a-b, Treasure Annual Report 2003, 16. no. 2) and Ravencliff Cave, Derbyshire (British Museum 1906,1224.1-2) as well as recent finds such as Ansley, Warwickshire and West Acre Norfolk (Treasure Annual Report 2007, 47-48). A very similar strip from Sproxton, N…

A fragment of decorated gold sheet. The fragment is flat and tapers from 9mm to 8mm in width. The tapering edges are original; either end is broken. The broken edges are rough and do not look as if they have been intentionally cut to size. One side is decorated with stamped reversed 'S'-shaped motifs. Each 'S'-shaped motif is made from six or seven tapering or sub-triangular punchmarks. The fragment is of uncertain age and function, but is of a style that would suggest it is over 300 years old. The field on which the gold fragment was found has also produced large quantities of Roman …

Description
Fragment of gold strip, embossed with four horizontal lines. In one corner there is a piercing, probably deliberate. The long edges have been folded back such that the folded edge appears on the ‘reverse’ side, from which the embossing has been carried out.
Maximum length 30mm; maximum width 17mm; thickness less than 0.5mm; weight 1.21 grams.
Identification
In all likelihood the piece is more than 300 years old. However it is not possible to assign this fragment to a firm cultural or chronological context.
Consequently, in terms o…

An incomplete gold sheet panel decorated with filigree wire. The wire is laid out into two tapering fields with heavier beaded wire as a border. The two fields are filled with a balanced herringbone design made up of fine grade wires. These are set out in groups of four and six which are parallel to the beaded border. The lower edge of the panel is cut and the upper edge of the fragment is torn. The surviving length of the fragment is 25mm and the maximum width is 18mm.
