A folded, crushed and crumpled fragment of very thin gold sheet or foil. It is difficult to identify definite original edges, but it appears to be a comparatively narrow incomplete strip. On the largest surviving visible, relatively un-crumpled, roughly rectangular part of the sheet there appear to be three or four lines of lettering, c. 1mm in height, and possibly in Latin.

14 droplets and fragments of gold and silver This interesting collection of material includes 9 molten droplets, 2 fragments that have been cut from ingots and 3 fragments of twisted wire. The objects in the collection are made from both gold (of different colours), silver and in one case lead with tin. One molten droplet clearly contains a partially melted piece of gold wire fused within it. Initially it was considered that these objects might have come from the manufacture of Iron Age gold and silver objects. Analysis of the metal content of the droplets and other pieces, …

An incomplete gold Roman (AD 43-410) finger ring dating, probably dating to the first century. The ring is crushed and distorted. It has a distinctive construction using a thin sheet of gold. It has a simple D-shaped hoop widening at the shoulders to the bezel. The hoop is faceted, with a central transverse ridge and slightly angled sides, perhaps gently hammered to create sloping slides. The bezel comprises a central lozenge motif delineated by grooves with a central opening that would have originally contained the setting, perhaps a stone or intaglio, which are now lost. The se…

A pointed oval or heart-shaped applique of gold decorates both shoulders of the hoop; in both instances the pointed oval points down the hoop; they appear to have been settings for enamel; traces of a bluish-grey friable material remains in one of them but this has largely been removed by degradation and / or cleaning after recovery. Treasure reference no. 2013 T706: two fragments of folded sheet gold, found together and presumably once part of the same object. Fragment A is sub-rectangular and appears to have one original edge. Fragment B is also sub-rectangular and has been clearly folded at least four times. The longer edge is original, as appears to be the outer edge, indicating that this was once a flat, rectangular sheet. The surface is difficult to see owing to the poor state of preservation, but it appears to have had some kind of pressed decoration. In some ways this item resembles Roman lamella.

A Roman gold finger-ring, crushed and severely distorted. Its tripartite construction comprises a symmetrical pair of slender bands flanking, and fused to, a central beaded wire. At the bezel the outer edge of both bands expands to form a sub-triangular field. This is occupied by a lozenge-shaped cell formed from beaded wire with a single pellet at each end of the long axis. A further two pairs of pellets flank the beaded wire either side of the lozenges. The lozenge motif is reminiscent of the cells on Roman 'Hercules club' type ear-rings and pendants, some of which are filled with e…
