A modern gold plated wire ring Description: This object is a ring of approximately finger-ring size. It is constructed from coiled lengths of very fine, twisted wire. Five strands have been loosely coiled around themselves and curved into a ring. The overall appearance is quite loose and untidy. Each strand is composed of four very fine wires. Two pairs of these wires were twisted together, and the two twisted pairs then themselves twisted around each other. Dimensions: Diameter: 18mm (approx.); Thickness of pair of twisted wires: 0.07mm (approx.); Weight: 0.44g Metal c…

A folded gold strip comprising eleven gold wires joined side by side by soldering. Max. length 15.93mm; max. width 8.14mm; max. thickness 4.4mm; thickness of wire approx.. 0.62mm; weight 2.26 grams. Both manufacturing technique and composition are consistent with a Bronze Age date, although precise analogues for the type are presently lacking. Gold ribbon ornaments are known from the Middle Bronze Age, c. 1300-1100 BC, but the ribbed effect is achieved here by grooving (cf the piece from Ilam, Staffs. (Treasure Annual Report 2005/6, 20, no.14). Solder is used at this date in the…

A sheet gold zoomorphic artefact of unidentified function likely dating to the 9th-10th century AD. Description:It is sub-rectangular in form and consists of a slightly domed sheet of gold with a flat back-plate. The artefact is slightly crushed and distorted with a large lateral crack slightly off of the central line. The back-plate has come away from the upper sheet at one end, and there is a gap between the two elements at the other end. The object appears to be largely hollow, although some material - perhaps soil - is visible inside. Two lateral perforations, one on each side,…

A heavily distorted fragment of gold sheet, probably from a strip or 'ribbon' of Bronze Age date, c. 2350 - 800 BC Description: The object has been folded several times and is creased and torn in several locations, all presumably in antiquity. It is difficult to establish the original form of the object owing to its current condition, but it was probably a band with straight sides, the shape of the terminal cannot be distinguished. The incised linear decoration of the strip can be paralleled on a number of gold strips and 'ribbons' of known and very probable Bronze Age date, for ex…

A fragment of sheet metal gold, likely of early Bronze Age date. Description: Embossed gold decorated fragment wit 4 ribs running parallel to the edges. The outer and interior ribs are decorated with pointille decoration. The fragment has a perforation at the narrower end which could be for suspension. The break is regular. The shape of the fragment suggests that it might have had a crescentic shape when complete. The surface is heavily crumpled. A gold unidentified object, possibly a fragment of a torc or bracelet, of probable Iron Age date (c. 150-50 BC). Description: The object is comprised of two wires, sub-circular in cross-section, twisted together. The wires are roughly and irregularly facetted along their length, suggesting they were forged out from a square section rod before being hammered into a more circular cross-section. In many places, hammer marks and striations are visible. Both ends show signs of having been chiselled, suggesting that the original object was deliberately broken up. The fragment itself is…

An incomplete Middle Bronze Age cast gold spiral-twisted torc dating to the to the Taunton (c.1400-1250 BC), or more probably the Penard (c. 1300-1150 BC), metalwork phases of the Middle Bronze Age (dates following Roberts et al. 2013). Description: Possibly less than half of the object survives due to two transverse breaks in the bar. The object is made of a rod that has bent into a U-shape in plane. This rod is square in section with accentuated corners created by slightly concave edges. This has been twisted tightly across surviving its length, having 22 twists. Scienti…

A fragment of probable Iron age torc. Description: A short length of thick gold alloy wire, which gently curves towards one end. It has been cut at both ends using a chisel or similar implement. The surface shows evidence of hammering and a few light scratches. Measurements: length: 16.4mm diameter: 3.2mm weight: 2.15g Discussion: The wire is facetted in places, suggesting it was hammered out from a square-section piece to achieve a rounder cross-section. This is characteristic of Iron Age wire production (Joy et al. 2014: 149-50). Similar fragments, dating from around …

A short length of square-cross-section wire. The wire is relatively straight, but has been twisted by around 180 degrees. Both ends seem to have been cut using a chisel or similar implement. The edges show striations and some signs of hammering. Measurements: Length: 22.7mm; Width of square cross-section: 2.5-3.0mm; Weight: 2.6g Metal content: Non-destructive X-ray fluorescence analysis of a square-sectioned twisted wire fragment from, Kent, carried out by the British Museum's Scientific Research Section indicated a surface composition of approximately 87-88% gold, 11-12% silve…

A complete early medieval gold beaded sword hilt ring. Few external abrasions. The object is sub-circular in plan, thinner towards one side. It is formed from beaded wire Recent finds from the Saffordshire Hoard: STAFFS-BE4398, STAFFS-BE3AE2,STAFFS-E5CE97 and STAFFS-D2CD85 indicate that this object is in fact likely to be a 7th century sword hilt ring. Treasure case 2005 T303 Two joining fragments of corrugated gold sheet, seemingly originally of tubular form, now crushed. The form, style and overall appearance of the fragments do not correspond to any known ancient type, and scientific analysis of the body metal and soldered seam confirm the curatorial view that the sheet is part of an object of recent date, probably manufactured within the last hundred years or so. A 'fob' seal matrix consisting of a thin (2mm) carved brown and clear oval gemstone in a gold frame, attached to an enamelled gold swivel mount. The gemstone depicts a winged cherub in profile, facing to the viewer's right, with drapery trailing from his shoulders. In his outstretched right hand he holds a thin, twisted item, possibly a rope or the mouthpiece to a musical instrument. A series of waves covers the bottom third of the image and the cherub sits astride a cannon-shaped barrel floating among them.
