A gold unidentified object, possibly a fragment of a torc or bracelet, of probable Iron Age date (c. 150-50 BC). Description: The object is comprised of two wires, sub-circular in cross-section, twisted together. The wires are roughly and irregularly facetted along their length, suggesting they were forged out from a square section rod before being hammered into a more circular cross-section. In many places, hammer marks and striations are visible. Both ends show signs of having been chiselled, suggesting that the original object was deliberately broken up. The fragment itself is…

A sheet gold zoomorphic artefact of unidentified function likely dating to the 9th-10th century AD. Description:It is sub-rectangular in form and consists of a slightly domed sheet of gold with a flat back-plate. The artefact is slightly crushed and distorted with a large lateral crack slightly off of the central line. A fragment of sheet metal gold, likely of early Bronze Age date. Description: Embossed gold decorated fragment wit 4 ribs running parallel to the edges. The outer and interior ribs are decorated with pointille decoration. The fragment has a perforation at the narrower end which could be for suspension. The break is regular. The shape of the fragment suggests that it might have had a crescentic shape when complete. The surface is heavily crumpled. Dimensions: Length: 65.02mm, Width: 5.59mm-24.77mm, Thickness: 0.28mm and Weight: 2.83g Analysis: Non-destructive X-ray fluor…

A heavily distorted fragment of gold sheet, probably from a strip or 'ribbon' of Bronze Age date, c. 2350 - 800 BC Description: The object has been folded several times and is creased and torn in several locations, all presumably in antiquity. It is difficult to establish the original form of the object owing to its current condition, but it was probably a band with straight sides, the shape of the terminal cannot be distinguished. The incised linear decoration of the strip can be paralleled on a number of gold strips and 'ribbons' of known and very probable Bronze Age date, for ex…

A modern gold plated wire ring Description: This object is a ring of approximately finger-ring size. It is constructed from coiled lengths of very fine, twisted wire. Five strands have been loosely coiled around themselves and curved into a ring. The overall appearance is quite loose and untidy. Each strand is composed of four very fine wires. Two pairs of these wires were twisted together, and the two twisted pairs then themselves twisted around each other. Dimensions: Diameter: 18mm (approx.); Thickness of pair of twisted wires: 0.07mm (approx.); Weight: 0.44g Metal c…

A folded gold strip comprising eleven gold wires joined side by side by soldering. Max. length 15.93mm; max. width 8.14mm; max. thickness 4.4mm; thickness of wire approx.. 0.62mm; weight 2.26 grams. Both manufacturing technique and composition are consistent with a Bronze Age date, although precise analogues for the type are presently lacking. Gold ribbon ornaments are known from the Middle Bronze Age, c. 1300-1100 BC, but the ribbed effect is achieved here by grooving (cf the piece from Ilam, Staffs. (Treasure Annual Report 2005/6, 20, no.14). Solder is used at this date in the…

A piece of gold, much bent and distorted. Beneath the folds can be seen the arms of England (first quarter) and those of Ireland (third quarter). This heraldic evidence points to a date of manufacture after the Act of Union in 1707.
