Merovingian copy of a gold solidus, dating to the 6th or early 7th century The obverse is obviously initially copied from a coin of Anastasius (AD 491-518), but the actual type with the emperor holding a cross on globe is later, in use from the reign of Justinian I (AD 527-68) onwards.  In fact, the reverse type suggests that the coin types are copied from a gold solidus struck at Constantinople for Justinian I (MIB 6), the prototype being struck AD 537-42.  The name of Justininian has been replaced with that of Anastasius.  Therefore the piece probably dates to the lat…

VICTOR-IA AVGG reverse type depicting Two draped emperors nimbate, seated facing on throne, one on right holding mappa in left hand and the two together holding globe. Behind a victory, below a palm branch. Mint of Milan (Mediolanum), -//COM. As Hoxne no. 16; RIC IX, pp. 77-78, nos. 5e/8(a1). Coin has slight post-depositional folding to one edge. Measurements: 20.34mm in diameter, 1.27mm thick and 4.47g in weight.

The object consists of a Byzantine gold solidus of Maurice Tiberius (582-602), which has been modified into a pendant by the addition of a gold suspension loop. Anglo-Saxon pendants made from re-used imported gold coins are typical of the late sixth and early seventh centuries, especially in Kent. Although the majority of these finds come from graves, stray finds are also recorded, and there is nothing to suggest that this coin comes from a recently disturbed grave, although it is possible that at some point a grave may have accidentally been disturbed in the course of ploughing. Gold solidus of Jovinus (411-13), RESTITVTOR REIP reverse type depiciting emperor draped, cuirassed, standing right, holding standard in right hand and Victory on globe in left hand; treading down a prostrate captive with left foot Mint of Triet Trier, RIC X, Trier no. 1704. Jovinus was a usurper (unofficial emperor) who reigned in Gaul from AD 411-413. The coin is in very good condition, with little or no wear, although there is a small split at the edge behind the Emperor's head.
