Fragment of a gold finger-ring, comprising the bezel and part of the hoop. The bezel is oval-shaped with the remains of an integral hoop at each end: approximately 3mm at one and 8mm at the other. The surviving portion shows that the hoop originally tapered inwards, the narrowest surviving point being about 2mm. It is flat in cross-section. The front of the bezel is decorated with an applied design executed in gold granulation and beaded wire filigree. The beaded wire is much worn, with the individual beads now difficult to discern. The individual gold granules vary in size and s…

A gold finger ring with distorted hoop of 'D-shaped' section, widening from the back to the bezel. Each shoulder is decorated by a series of longitudinal grooves, and there is a grooved central ridge which, at the non-bezel end, terminates in a fork with projecting, tapering groove. The box bezel is now empty, the sides flaring towards the open top. Each of the setting's two longer faces has a line of sub-oval perforations, now worn thin, which would once have contained enamel. Length (bezel to back of hoop): 21.4mm; width: 23.25mm. Weight: 2.21g. A ring with similar bezel to th…

Slightly curved gold strip, broken at both ends. The long edges are intact; one is lightly inturned. The outer surface bears 7 grooves parallel to the long edges giving a ridged effect. Under magnification the appearance of the broken ends suggests that the piece may have been made from a double thickness of gold foil. Length 16.4mm; width 8.1mm; thickness 1.2mm; weight 0.69 grams. Identification: While the piece bears a superficial resemblance to some Bronze Age types, it differs in detail. The very high silver content also suggests a later dating. However the piece lacks di…

A solid-cast gold penannular ring, of 'D-shaped' section, with downward tapering gap between the opposing terminals. Traces of silvery stripes decorate the surface of the object. Discussion: Penannular rings with silver-rich banding are a well known artefact type of the Later Bronze Age, with recorded parallels including treasure cases 2005 T373 (Ely, Cambs) and 2005 T 422 (Englefield, West Berks). Analysis: Non-destructive X-ray fluorescence analysis of the surface of penannular ring from Much Haddam, Hertfordshire, indicated a gold content of 77-79%, silver content of …

A worn and melted gold disc, probably a Gallo-Belgic A stater. Dimensions: Thickness: 1.9mm; Diameter: 24.2mm; Weight 7.60g Discussion: This item was submitted for consideration as potential Treasure because it was found very close to a previously recorded Roman gold aureus of Trajan (BH-80B838). However, given that the coin is likely to be a Gallo-Belgic A stater dating to the 2nd Century BC, the proximity of its findspot to the gold aureus is thought to be coincidental rather than representational of a group of coins lost at the same time. It therefore falls outside the criter…
