  • Thumbnail image of NMGW-D28B2C

Record ID: NMGW-D28B2C
Object type: UNIDENTIFIED OBJECT
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: County of Herefordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A hammered gold sheet of uncertain date. The sheet has a maximum length of 51.4mm, width of 39.3mm, 0.7mm thick and weighs 14.76g. The sheet is lacking any diagnostic features so the use and date cannot be determined. Small percussion marks on the surface indicate the sheet was intentionally flattened before being deposited, discarded, or lost. Due to the uncertainty of the date, the object is not considered Treasure under the Treasure Act 1996.

An amorphous glob of gold, that survives as evidence of gold working of an uncertain date. Description: The gold is very pure, with a slightly pitted surface of a solidified fluid. One end of the glob is larger and heavier with a long neck to a small round terminal. Discussion: The high purity, pitted surface and solidified fluid form confirms that this gold has been (re)worked rather than being an example of a naturally occurring nugget of gold ore. As the gold is undiagnostic and cannot be proven to be more than 300 years old, the object does not qualify as Treasure.

A complete hollow gold bead of uncertain dating, probably Post Medieval to Modern (AD 1800 to AD 1900). The bead is spherical. Several small sub triangular depressions are present around the mid point, possibly teeth marks. A circular perforation, with an internal diameter of 1.3 mm is present top and bottom.  It has a diameter of 7.1 mm and is 7.0 mm long. It weighs 0.6 g. The bead is a mid yellow colour, with an even patina. The bead is non-diagnostic for earlier periods, so it can not be proved to be older than 300 years. Therefore it falls outside of the requirements of th…

Description The object is a mostly plain bar shape being rectangular in plan and in cross section while in profile it is very slightly concave. One terminal is flat and square however the opposite narrow edge appears to have been cut its edge being bevelled into a point that looks triangular in side profile. The bar is gold in colour. Dimensions: The bar is 21.6mm long, 6.2mm wide, 3.2mm thick and weighs 5.85 grams. Discussion:  Barring the cut mark on the ingot there are no diagnostic indicators for the date of manufacture. This is well evidenced by a number of similar ingots …
