Description: Roughly circular or slightly oval gold object, apparently made from a piece of flat sheet. An oval area in the centre has been raised, and this pierced in the centre by a small circular hole c. 1mm in diameter. The face with the raised centre has fine concentric lines scratched or engraved around the flange, and an edge which appears slightly thickened in places. The raised centre has broad lines scored across it, perhaps as a result of damage while in the soil. The other face does not appear to have any markings other than those caused by general wear and tear. The circu…

Description: Undated gold ring. Slightly irregular section, D-shaped externally with a median arris internally. The internal surface is irregular and not well finished / smoothed in some areas. Date: Undated. Dimensions: Internal diameter 16 - 17mm. External diameter 22 - 22.5mm. Width of band 4 - 4.5mm. Thickness of band 2.5 - 3mm. Weight 6.7g. Discussion: The lack of diagnostic features make this ring difficult to date. The irregular section of the band would be unusual for a post-medieval finger ring, the form and plainness would be unusual for a ring of Roman to Medieval dat…

A short length of gold strip from an unidentified object of uncertain date. The strip is rectangular in section and has rounded ends. It is bent double and has some damage at the bend. The strip is undecorated. Due to a lack of archaeological context and diagnostic features it is not possible to assign this to any particular date or culture and is best regarded as an undiagnostic fragment. The strip can be compared to YORYM-90AE41 (2011 T743) and BUC-CC8463 (2010T510). Discussion: Due to the undiagnostic nature of the find, and despite it containing a minimum of 10% precious…

The find consists of a small gold ingot of rounded, sub-rectangular shape and roughly plan-convex section; length, 17mm; width, 11mm (max); weight, 8.76 grams. There is a slight, diagonal nick across the narrow end of a hammered, ovoid depression on top, but this appears to have been accidentally caused during working rather than deliberately cut to test the metal.

TREASURE ITEM 2012 T628: Fragment of a gold strip with the longest edge deliberately and neatly folded. The other edges are damaged and are most likely not deliberate. 8mm up from the longest edge is a line of small punched dots such that the folded edge appears on the same side from which the punching has been carried out. There is a small hole in the top right of the piece that is probably not deliberate. A similar gold strip was found in East Lindsey, Lincolnshire PAS ID YORYM-AECC98. Description: An incomplete gold ingot of unspecified date. It is 31.46mm long, 8.6mm wide and 5.95mm thick. It weighs 17.52g. The ingot is sub rectangular in section with the main upper and lower face being flat, but the sides are rounded, made up of 5-6 hammered facets of changing width. Gold foil. A strip of fine beaten gold foil of thickness 0.18mm. The strip was apparently straight-edged and has been neatly folded at least nine times producing a neat and compact flattened roll. This material would appear to be prepared for craft use, as for the decoration by gilding of metalwork, rather than being bullion. Suggested date: Unknown, Roman to Post-Medieval, 100-1600.
