A complete gold ingot of uncertain date.  Description: The ingot is cuboid in shape and rectangular in cross-section with four distinct faces and edges. The terminals are rounded, however one is thicker and more irregularly-shaped than the other. The surfaces of the top and bottom facets of the ingot show some splitting or cracking, more so on one than the other. This less blemished facet also dips slightly from the edges and has a more irregular surface with many striations. The side facets are relatively smooth in comparison but, like all four facets, d…

A gold, finger ingot of uncertain date, probably prehistoric. Description: The ingot is sub-rectangular in plan, with rounded ends. It has a shallow D-shaped cross-section with slight dishing along this face. One end also has dip and pellet in likely indicating the ingate or pouring point of the molten metal into the mould for the ingot. The surfaces of the ingot are very irregular suggesting a coarse mould, possibly even an earth one. Measurements: 67.5mm long, 12.22mm wide, 5.5mm thick and 36.77g in weight. Discussion: The simplicity of the form and the lack of archae…

A fragmented of gold ingot of uncertain date Description: Hammered gold bar, of rectangular section, tapering slightly towards rounded ends. Accretion of (?)ferrous metal towards one end on one face. There are no obvious test marks. Dimensions: 24 x 6 x 4mm, 5.92g Discussion: Ingots are extremely difficult to date with any certainty unless they are found in association with other objects, or unless they have features which point firmly to association with a particular period. Although there is often an assumption that ingots are likely to be of Viking origin, as they function…

A fragment of a gold ingot. One end is rounded and worn, and the other shows signs of a clear break. There are no diagnostic features which might provide an indication of its likely age. It was shown to curators of the Roman and Early Medieval collections at the British Museum, which cover the dates that most ingots reported under the Treasure Act are thought to be from, but both agreed that although the ingot appeared to be fairly old, it was undateable. Dimensions: Weight: 2.6g Thickness: 4mm Length: 8mm

Thin fragment of gold ingot of probably ancient (more than 300 years old) but otherwise uncertain Description: The ingot has been hammered relatively thin and has one rounded end. The find consists of a small gold ingot of rounded, sub-rectangular shape and roughly plan-convex section; length, 17mm; width, 11mm (max); weight, 8.76 grams. There is a slight, diagonal nick across the narrow end of a hammered, ovoid depression on top, but this appears to have been accidentally caused during working rather than deliberately cut to test the metal.

An incomplete, age uncertain but probably Victorian, gold alloy, sheet construction, broken & damaged possible pendant or brooch. Circular, biconvex, hollow artefact with applied wire and pellets decoration with 19 concentric drop shapes applied around the outer edge. Two twisted wires applied around the outer edge, a fine one close to the front and a coarser one behind. Two small holes on the back that once possibly held a pin for attachment or are simple 'expansion' holes from when the object was made. There is a place at one point around the edge, adjacent to the missing drop shape…

Penannular gold ring made from twisted wires. There is an area of deformation or breakage to the wires in the centre of the ring. This is characteristic of the ring being opened and closed over a period of time. Although the ring looks to be possibly ancient, nothing about its form, design or manufacture is recognisable from a particular period. The results of metal analysis at the British Museum could also suggest an ancient origin.
