Description: Gold ingot of flattened oval section, broken at both ends, scrapped and chipped, with some visible hammer marks. The gold has a pinkish hue, reflecting the high copper content.
Dimensions: 20 x 9 x 6mm. Weight: 7.14g.
Analysis: Non-destructive X-ray fluorescence analysis of a fragment of a gold ingot indicated a surface composition of approximately 44-46% gold, 8-10% silver, the rest being largely copper, with a small amount of tin (Department of Scientific Research, British Museum, 19th April 2018).
Discussion: The form of the ingot is not diagnostic to an…

A small flat cut strip or scrap of gold with no decoration or diagnostic features. This was considered as a possible treasure item because it was gold. The following specialists have said that it is not proveably more than 300 years old and so does not qualify as treasure. Gillian Varndell, Curator, Neolithic Collections Neolithic of Britain and Europe, Richard Hobbs, Curator, Romano-British Collections Roman Britain and Sue Brunning, Curator, Early Medieval European Insular Collections agree with this decision.

Undecorated lengh of gold, now ring shaped but more twisted when first found. Eased into a ring shape by the finder! The marks at each end of the strip do not go right through. Thought to constitute a treasure item but on examination by Neil Wilkin and Gillian Varndell of the British Museum the object was considered to be undateable and so probably not 300 years old.

An irregular fragment of gold broken off a larger piece. This is probably an undiagnostic shape and unless analysis proves otherwise, is undateable
Although the object contains a minimum of 10% precious metal it may not qualify as Treasure under the stipulations of the Treasure Act 1996 because it cannot be proved to be more than 300 years old.

Short length of gold strip, probably deliberately broken. In the absence of archaeological context it is not possible to assign this to any particular date or culture and is best regarded as an undiagnostic fragment.
It is noted that two Middle Bronze Age ribbon torcs were found two fields away (2009 T435). The widths recorded for them are less in both cases. Due to the undiagnostic nature of the find it cannot be securely dated to pre-1710 and as such falls outside the provisions of the Treasure Act 1996
