A Roman gold openwork bracelet, now rather crushed and distorted, with dirt still present inside much of the openwork (c. AD 300 - 400). The hoop is flat in profile. The body of the bracelet is decorated with plain edges inside which the decorative zone is divided into four sections by circles inside which are equal-armed crosses with volutes between the arms. Between each of these circles is a repeating pattern of waves just inside the outer edges, which further enclose rows of conjoined hearts that are further subdivided into three polygonal cells.

Probably VICTORIA AVGVSTORVM reverse type, depicting Victory advancing to front, head left, holding wreath and cross on globe. Copying mint of Constantinople. cf RIC X 212 or 213.
Richard Abdy says "Probably made in sub-Roman Gaul, they are often termed 'Pseudo-Imperial Gallic'. It is difficult to find parallels in this series as the variety comes down to individual specimens (being that loosely copied). Artefacts from this…

Broad period: ROMAN

Workflow stage: Published
A Roman gold finger-ring, with openwork hoop and empty box-bezel, severely distorted, damaged and crushed, but evidently originally of good quality workmanship. The hoop, lightly tapered from shoulder to back, comprises a pair of border strips enclosing a symmetrical arrangement of openwork motifs: a central small annular ring at the back is flanked by scrolled tendrils which are followed by a pair of confronted peltas at the shoulder. Where the border strips are soldered to the side of the bezel they terminate in a crook-like scroll enclosing a pellet. The distorted box bezel, its ba…

Object type: VOTIVE MODEL
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Nottinghamshire
Workflow stage: Published
A small, slender, sub-triangular piece of gold sheet, probably a Roman votive plaque.
The two long converging sides appear to have complete edges; the pointed tip is bent; and the base appears to be a broken edge. Four parallel and equally-spaced crease lines running at right angles to the long axis indicate that the object was probably folded and compressed and has, perhaps, recently been 'unfolded'.
Despite the surface irregularities caused by the folding and unfolding processes an incised/ repoussé design is visible. It comprises a central rib with angled veining on either si…

Roman oval sheet-gold finger ring setting depicting Vulcan. The repousse design shows Vulcan standing holding tongs in his left hand, and a hammer in his raised right hand above an anvil. There appears to be a plain lined border around the design. 1mm of the edge is bent over at 90 degrees, presumably so it could be set into a ring. The metal is very thin, c.0.18mm. Length 12.42mm, width 9.44mm, weight 0.36g.
