A complete gold walking cane ferrule dating from the late 19th century. Description: The ferrule is made from thin sheet gold and has a stamped design in relief of foliate scrolls, with a thin plain border at each edge. A large central heraldic shield features an inscribed crest of a lion's head charged with a bend. The hallmark to the right of the shield shows the initials 'J.K.' and '18Ct'. The ferrule is sub-rectangular and appears to taper in slightly towards the base. The ferrule would have originally been tubular; however, it has been compressed, and is now almost flat. Th…

A circular disc of gold, with a hand cut 'milled' edge and a piercing through the central flan. The milled edge stands proud of the flan, more so on one side than the other. It is unclear what this item was part of or what it was used for; it might be part of a composite necklace or it may be part of a mount, possibly from a knife handle. It is likely to date after 1716, and therefore falls outside of the remit of The Treasure Act 1996.

Gold foliate accessory. It is made of fine pieces of gold, is broken in places and is therefore very delicate. Within a small circular recess to the front and bottom of this piece is green enamel. The presence of four loops at the corners suggests that it may have been sewn onto fabrics, though it was more than likely part of a necklace or bracelet. It is in the style of 19th-century revivalist jewellery and therefore is not classed as Treasure.

Fragmentary gold tube-shaped object with filigree decoration. The object may be part of a dress fitting. Unidentified gold spherical decorative object,. The object is in two halves, both of which are rough hemispheres, which have a lip around them in order to connect the two halves. Although the object has been punctured roughly three times on each side, presumably from deposition, a small regularly punched hole near the lip of both pieces seems to suggest that this item was somehow suspended or used for decoration on a thin string or chord, though no attachment loop remains. One half of the object is crimped on the lipped edge in addition to the punctures, whereas the other half has gen…

Slightly curved gold strip, broken at both ends. The long edges are intact; one is lightly inturned. The outer surface bears 7 grooves parallel to the long edges giving a ridged effect. Under magnification the appearance of the broken ends suggests that the piece may have been made from a double thickness of gold foil. Length 16.4mm; width 8.1mm; thickness 1.2mm; weight 0.69 grams. Identification: While the piece bears a superficial resemblance to some Bronze Age types, it differs in detail. The very high silver content also suggests a later dating. However the piece lacks di…

An unidentified gold or silver-gilt object. The object is a tiny cylinder with rounded sides. From one side projects a short rod and opposite is a shallow circular recess. Cast decoration comprises foliate shapes. The purpose is not clear but this may be a fitting for a watch of a pendant. It's date is likely to be 18th or 19th century. It was not therefore submitted under the Treasure Act.

This comprises of a sphere of metal, polished to a high sheen, attached to a conical sheet of metal, which has been torn from the rest of the body and folded in on itself. It is impossible to determine the original size of this object, but the torn edges do show that this is not a gold-plated metal. It is likely to be a high-polished brass, given the colour and lack of oxidisation. The sphere at the tip of this piece is hollow but strong and unmarked, suggesting it is made from a strong metal (not…

A slightly bent 16th-17th century gold toothpick/earscoop. The pick would probably have been sickle-shaped. It emerged from the body of a stylised dragon, shaped to serve as a handle. Each side of the body is marked with incised lines that represent scales. A small spoon-shaped earscoop emerges from the dragon's mouth, as if to form the dragon's tongue with the bowl facing downwards. Mid-way along the upper side of the dragon's body there is an integral suspension loop. The loop retains a free-running gold wire ring. A gold post-medeival thimble. The thimble has a low domed crown and an upturned base rim, the holes are punched in concentric circles (not a spiral) that continue up the body onto the crown. The holes vary slightly in size. This thimble was found in the early 1990's and as such would not be covered by the Treasure Act 1996. It may however be subject to Treasure Trove laws and this is being investigated.
