Gold or silver gilt, probable pin head. A composite construction comprising a spherical sheet metal globe with elaborate applied decoration of pellets and twisted wires. A spherical knop of diameter 2.5mm appears on top, with a ragged hole of length 2.6mm suggesting the loss of a separate shank formerly passing into the object on the bottom. This might alternatively have received the wire of an ear ring, or some other means of attachment. Upper, medial and lower rows of six smaller [diameter 1mm] applied spheres define two fields, each occupied by six juxtaposed pelta-shaped curls of …

An incomplete gold pin dating to the post medieval or early modern period, c. AD 1750-1850.
Only half of the hollow head of the pin survives. Similarly to ESS-A014C8, the outer surface of the head is decorated with golden pellets of different sizes, each surrunded by rope work filigree. Around what would have been the circumference of the complete head, there are five settings, only three of which still have their small circular blue inlay stone, which may be turquoise. Each setting is surrounded by four of the larger and two of the smaller size pellets.

Description: The head of a two-part copper alloy pin capped in gold, dating to the 16th century. The head is spherical and hollow, decorated on the outer surface. There is a band running around the circumference of the head, which suggests that it is formed of two hemispheres, soldered together. On either side of the band is a central dome with five domes surrounding. At the peak of each dome is a recess with a small blue stone inlay, except for one dome at the base which has a larger perforation from the pin shank to enter and another in the opposing dome where it is likely the pin wo…

A Post Medieval gold pin, probably dating 16th - 17th century. The pin has a globular head decorated with filigree raised pellets enclosed within twisted wire rings. The pellets have a flattened head rather than being spherical. The shank has a square cross-section and has been decoratively twisted midway along the shank. The pin is bent out of alignment.
The filigree decoration is similar to the larger pins with spherical heads which have been dated 16th - 17th century, for example SWYOR-538566.
Dimensions: length: 32.13mm; diameter: 4.03mm; weight: 0.32g.

A probably hollow spherical headed pin dating from the Post Medieval period (probably 16th or 17th century) and made of gold. The head is 5.64mm in diameter. The pin head is decorated to imitate filigree and applied knop decoration has probably actually been incised or moulded. The design is a mixture of leaves, flowers, dots and rings. The pin shank is wire, circular in section and tapers to the point. It is curved along its length and there are regular notches in the wire.
The pin is similar to filigree and imitation filigree ball headed pins of the 16th century such as SWYOR-538…

A Post Medieval gold pin head (16th century).
Curator's report: Small, heavy gold pin head with hole for attachment to a gold wire. The hemispherical head squashed flat, decorated with applied filigree circlets and knops, and with flower heads made up of small turquoises (identified by Raman spectroscopy) held in claw settings and surrounded by petals of openwork gold decoration made of fine twisted wire.
This fascinating pin head suggests the gold prototypes for the silver-gilt types of the 16th Century which are commonly reported through the Treasure Act. Its e…
