Circumstances of Discovery: Unclear. The torc was discovered somewhere near Diss, Norfolk in 1942. The finder is now deceased so it is now impossible to locate the exact find spot or the landowner. The torc remained in a bank vault until the present owner had it valued. The dealer recognised that the artefact may be ancient and reported it to the British Museum. Fragment of penannular bracelet: 17.7 cm long by 1.2 cm wide; weighing 24.65 g, in 99% pure gold. Catherine Johns (BMHF) notes that this is the first recorded example in precious metal of a type otherwise known in bronze, dating probably to the end of the first century BC or first half of the first century AD. Description: A gold-alloy bracelet with loop terminals, Iron Age (c. 100 - 50 BC). The bracelet is comprised of two ropes plaited together, each rope is made up of two wires twisted together. Each terminal is formed of two loops. The outside surface of the terminals has been filled with a lower melting temperature gold-alloy containing approximately 16% more copper than the rest of the bracelet.
