An ingot of probable gold and silver. It is broken, at the break is a 'nick' which extends into the ingot for approx. 2mm and then the break occurs under this. The other end, which is an original terminal, is slightly bulbous. It is a pale gold colour and may be an alloy rather then a pure metal. Some flow marks are apparent as a result of casting, and the surfaces are all pitted, reminiscent of being cast in sand. Ingots such as these can be dated to the late Bronze Age (see Treasure Annual Report 1998-9, Item 11 and 12), although they are also found in the early medieva…

Fragment of a gold ingot, one end rounded and thick, the other broken away jaggedly and transversely. The two broad surfaces are flat and smooth except adjacent to the break where a rounded hammer mark of the full width is visible on both. The edge, convex and less smooth, contains cracks and fissures, some of which may be the result of post-depositional damage.

A fragment of a possible Early Medieval (Viking) gold ‘finger shaped’ ingot, dating to c. AD 870-950. It is a short, heavily marked, slightly bent, solid cylindrical length of gold, which appears to have been hammered. There is small nick at one end, just before the break and an apparently formed blunt end at the other. Dimensions: 14.2mm in length; 8.2mm in width; 6.88g in weight Discussion: The use of cut fragments of gold and silver as bullion in Viking England was relatively common in the period c. AD 870-950. Gold is less common in this context than silver, but …

A small gold ingot of Early Medieval date. The ingot is a thin strip that is roughly sub-rectangular in plan with rounded terminals. The underside of the ingot is flat while the top edge has ten low transverse ridges that create a ripping effect. The item is slightly thickened in the centre when viewed in profile (2mm high) and tapes towards either end (1.6mm and 1.1mm). Discussion: Without any diagnostic attributes, ingots such as this are traditionally difficult to date out of context. However, examples have been reported as treasure and are often attributed to a Viking date, …

An incomplete gold ingot of probable 7th Century AD dating. The ingot is semi-circular, with flat front and back sides. The top of the ingot is rounded, with bevelled edges, and the lower edge is incomplete with a jagged edge. Faint hammer marks can be seen on the flat surfaces. Dimensions: Length: 10.4 mm Width: 11.1 mm Thickness: 3.6 mm Weight: 3.5 g (54 grains) Discussion: The shape and style, with flattened front and back is suggestive of ingots of the 7th Century. Although it has not been tested using XRF analysis, from appearance and style, it is probably substantially prec…

This shape of ingot is not completely diagnostic, but it is typical of one of the forms known to be common in Viking hoards and as site finds of the late 9th and early 10th centuries. Although these ingots are most commonl found intact, it is not unusual for them to be cut into smaller pieces, to function within a bullion economy alongside other forms of ‘hack-silver’ or ‘hack-gold’. These ingots are typically made of silver rather than gold, but gold ingots of this period are known, and there is increasing evidence from hoards (eg Watlington) and site finds (eg…

Description: An irregular sub-rectangular fragment of 'hack' gold, cut on its upper and lower edges, curving slightly in plan and demonstrating some faceting to its upper face. Date: c. 1500 BC-1800 AD Dimensions: The fragment measures 10.82mm down its longest axis, 8.61mm wide by 1.27mm thick at its midpoint, and weighs 1.05g. Discussion: A number of similar gold fragments have been recorded on the PAS database via the Treasure Act, including LANCUM-681051 and SWYOR-784244. Though this piece was found in an area of high Early-Medieval (Early/Middle Anglo-Saxon) activity, i…

2017 T1182 Description: Gold bar of roughly oval section, irregularly shaped, tapering slightly from one end to the other. Roughly cast. Pitted from casting, but with no signs of any secondary treatment Dimensions: 59 x 9 (6.5) x 5.5mm Weight 24.8g Discussion: Although the form of the ingot is not diagnostic for the Viking Age, it is consistent with a number of known examples. The weight is also consistent with a Viking ounce of c. 25g. There are none of the the characteristic test marks found on Viking bullion, but this need not be significant, as they are not found on all ingots f…

Treasure Case 2005 T392 Date: Late 9th-11th century Description: A gold ingot of short, sub-rectangular section, the top and bottom faces hammered flat and there are also hammer marks on the sides. It would have been cast in a simple open mould either roughly cut in stone, or perhaps drawn in the earth with a stick. Discussion: Viking period gold ingots are more unusual than silver. A fragment of a gold ingot, possibly Bronze Age - Early Medieval in date, 2000BC-AD.1100. It has been broken at the top leaving a jagged edge. The outside surface has a faceted appearance from where it has been hammered into shape. The ingot is a flattened oval in cross section. The dating of gold ingots is difficult, there is a complete example with similar faceting DENO-938F3D, that was put through the Treasure process as 2005 T392. This was dated to the Early Medieval period, AD.900-1100. Gold ingot, while not as common in the 10th-11th century as silver, are traditionally ascri…

Section of rectangular bar, cut most of the way through and then broken off at both ends. No test marks. Dimensions: 9 x 7 x 4.5mm 2.6g The object has been deliberately cut from a larger bar, for use either in metalworking or within a bullion economy. The shape and size are broadly consistent with Anglo-saxon gold ingots of the 7th century, such as those from Sutton Hoo, although small pieces of hack-gold are becoming increasingly common from Viking contexts, and the manner of cutting has parallels in cut ingots from the Viking Age. The form is more typical of early Anglo-Sa…

Treasure reference no. 2016 T980: a gold ingot. The ingot is sub-rectangular in plan, and has been snipped at both ends. The underside is smooth and flat, while the upper side is slightly domed, being made of a series of flat, rectangular panels or hammer marks. This item was found in cultivated land within a concentration of objects dating to the early Anglo-Saxon period. A smaller number of Middle Saxon artefacts and coins were also found within this concentration. A possible date of circa 500-850 is therefore given for this ingot. Treasure reference 2018 T380: gold ingot. A thin [c.0.8mm] strip of beaten gold, neatly folded four times to produce a small rectangular billet. The beating of precious metal into ingot forms is particularly associated with the Vikings, and in the context of the Torksey area, with an attested encampment and numerous associated finds, an ascription to that period seems credible. Suggested date: Early Medieval, 850-1050. Length: 10.8mm, Width: 7.4mm, Thickness: 3.2mm, Weight: 1.00gms

Gold ingot fragment. Cast round-ended fragment of gold with upper and lower sides flattened by hammering. This form is characteristic of Viking-Age bullion in both silver and gold, though the reduction of precious metal to ingot form might have occurred at any period. Suggested date: Early Medieval, 850-1000. In view of its material and possible age this object is to be submitted to the Treasure process, ref. 2015 T430. Surface metal analysis conducted at the British Museum indicated an approximate gold content for the ingot of 43%, and 29% for silver the remainder being copper; the ingot weighs 39.0 grams. The ingot is bar-shaped and hammered to a square section with rounded edges; length, 61mm; width, 9mm; thickness, 8mm. There is a nick in the centre of one edge and there are both fine and coarse abrasions on the surfaces. The metal content of the ingot is not particularly consistent with it being from the Viking period, but would not be out of place for either the Iron Age or Medieval …
