Description: Fragment of gold sheet, probably of the Anglo-Saxon period. The bend is almost at right angles. To one side of the angle, one face is decorated; a triplet of straight grooved lines, the central one minimally wider, starts close to a finished straight edge and runs to a break. The lines are flanked on either side by a scatter of punched annulets (about 1mm in diameter), part-annulets and large dots. On the other side of the angle, the sheet is undecorated, although it has bends which may have formed a loose corrugation. It has a short length of original edge which mee…

Gold pierced imitation coin of early-medieval date, probably early 9th century; probably intended as a pendant. Description: A gold disc, struck with a design on both faces. Each face has a beaded border, originally very neatly placed around the edge, but in places now worn to a plain ridge. Within this is an imitation inscription mainly consisting of radial raised strokes, virtually all of which have raised dots at either end.  The centre of the design consists essentially of three horizontal rows of short vertical strokes on the obverse, and five …

Description: Flat fragment of gold bracteate which has been made by hammering thin sheet gold over a die. It was originally circular, c. 39mm in diameter, but now only about a quarter of the circumference survives with edges that are a little longer than the radius. The curved edge has a short fragment of D-section plain wire frame surviving, soldered on for a short length and then bent over to the reverse; it looks as if the flat face of the wire was soldered to the edge of the disc. Inside the framing wire, the bracteate has an undecorated zone around 3-4mm wide, then a ring of punch…

Gold bracteate disc pendant of type ‘B’ with repoussé decoration of a sword-wielding male figure facing right and engaged in combat with a beak-headed quadruped, with his left hand raised against (grasping, or being bitten by?) its jaws; diameter, 44 mm approx. His raised right hand clasps a sword behind his head and his hair is indicated by vertical ribbing, giving the impression of a helmet. There are four runes above his left hand, the central two of which are damaged making reading problematic. There is a further beak-headed quadruped behind and below the warrior…

Fragment of a gold ingot, one end rounded and thick, the other broken away jaggedly and transversely. The two broad surfaces are flat and smooth except adjacent to the break where a rounded hammer mark of the full width is visible on both. The edge, convex and less smooth, contains cracks and fissures, some of which may be the result of post-depositional damage.

Description: Circular gold stud or mount, inlaid with cloisonné garnets with curved tops to form a hemispherical domed boss. There are also detached fragments of garnet and gold foil, bagged separately. The object was originally built up on a gold sheet backplate, but this is now largely missing apart from a narrow strip around the edge. Onto this was fixed the cell walls, made from thin gold sheet, which form a central cross with a stepped or T-shaped cell at the end of each arm. There are therefore eight cells, one at the end of each arm and one in each of the …

The design consists of a human head in profile looking left, with a hand in front of the chin holding a spray of flowers, and shoulders turned to face the viewer. The head has fine parallel grooves indicating hair, running from the crown to a fringe above the eyes, and interrupted by a double scallop-edged line (like two lines of flat beading) forming a headband or 'diadem' running around the forehead just above the eyes. A gold finger-ring of unknown date. The finger-ring weighs 2.25g, has a circular hoop and rectangular cross-section. The external diameter is 18.3mm and the thickness of the band varies from 1.3mm to 0.7mm. The width of the band varies between 2.7mm and 4.3mm. The edges of the band are not straight and parallel to each other nor do they seem to have been shaped with any intentional form in mind, suggestive that a scrap strip of metal was formed into a continuous hoop without attempt to neaten the sides. While some of that might be the result of later damage, this i…

The top and bottom faces of the hoop have fine oblique scratches, probably from finishing with a file; the interior also has less tidy longitudinal striations. Description: Gold sword pyramid, square-based and low in height. Each of the four sides is inlaid with three cloisonné garnets in two designs, matching on opposing sides. Design 1 has a T-shaped cell at the top which is probably best described as a truncated triangle with a stepped-out base, like an arrow or Christmas tree shape. This is above two symmetrical garnets divided by a vertical cell wall, both garnets therefore L-shaped.
