A fragment of gold, likely hack gold from a penannular bracelet of Bronze Age date, possibly c.1100-850 BC. Description: The object is broadly 'axe-shaped' with a sub-circular terminal that tapers to a flat rectangular cross section. This was likely achieved by cutting and hammering. The tapered end has been cut, indicated by a bright rugged cut. The terminal also appears to have been cut from a larger object and then hammered smooth. The gold has a rich, bright yellow colour.  Measurements: Length: 14.77 mm; Width: 7.03 mm; Thickness: 6.43 …

A complete Middle Bronze Age gold tripartite penannular ring dating to circa 1300-1150 BC. It is C-shaped in plan comprised of three circular-sectioned penannular rings soldered together. Each terminates in a straight and even break. Discussion: The form is consistent with other examples processed through the Treasure Act including 2021 T762 (Gard 2021) and 2012 T165 (Smith 2012) each of which is dated to the Middle Bronze Age. In those records, it is noted that gold tripartite penannular rings often lack secure archaeological contexts (Meeks, Craddock and Needham 2008: 13) while the …

A folded fragment of a gold band or ribbon with repousse linear ribs of probable Bronze age date c. 2100 BC - 1150 BC. Description: the rectangular fragment has been folded twice into three layers. Unfolded it would have been approximately 20mm x 16mm. The visible long broken edge is split in three places, the edges folded inward with fresh breaks. The short side edges appear less ragged and possibly represent the original width of the ribbon. The ribbon is decorated with 19 or 20 repousse plain linear ribs, running vertically from the long edge…

A fragment of Middle Bronze Age (probably Penard phase, c. 1300 - 1100 BC) flange- or bar-twisted gold torc. The fragment is straight with breaks at either end. The torc has a x-shaped cross-section with four flanges, although they twist in such a way as to give a circular cross-section around the flanges. The breaks are quite sharp, suggesting they could be quite recent. The bend is not quite at the centre of the object.

Gold metalworking debris or ingot fragment. An irregularly sub-rectangular fragment of cast gold which has been hammered flat, with one slightly concave edge, all other sides are broken with a crystalline appearance. Reported as from the same location as a socketed axe dated to 1000-800 BC. As one of two items of similar date and recovered from the same find spot, this object technically fulfills criteria for a 'hoard' of two or more metal prehistoric objects found together, and is therefore to be submitted to the Treasure process, ref. 2022 T357. Suggested date: Late Bronze Age, 1000…

A complete, but folded, sheet gold basket-shaped ornament of Bronze Age date (2500-2200 BC). The object is composed of a single, oval sheet of gold, rolled into a cylinder. There is an integral, flat, sub-rectangular tang projecting from the centre of one long edge which appears to be truncated. In use, the object would have been a tube, but this example has been further folded. Both ends have been folded towards the middle, and the tube has been flattened, making the ornament now sub-rectangular. There is a crease visible about 2mm from the edge of the sheet all the way round, like a …

A gold fragment, possibly from a bracelet or torc, dating to the Middle Bronze Age, c. 1400-1150 BC (probably Penard phase, c. 1300 - 1100 BC). The fragment is broadly rectangular in cross section and measures 26.58mm in length. It has been loosely twisted, probably as part of decoration. The twist is regular which suggests this was part of the object when it was worn rather than occurring during later deposition. The fragment is ‘hooked’ in shape overall and weighs 8.35g. The break on the shorter end of the fragment appears to be cut. Dimensions: Length,&nb…

Description: A fragment of gold sheet foil with a series of decorative applied repousse marks presented on the outer face. Due to the condition and the small size of the fragment the overall design is unclear. The sheet has been folded into two and it is difficult to establish if this is deliberate and post depositional or later damage in the ploughsoil. What remains of the decorative design consists of a series of nine circular pointille bosses formed with a round headed punch or awl that has been worked from the underside to create the form. These bosses are arranged along one long…
