A complete probably Bronze Age unidentified object dating to circa 2300-800 BC. Made from a strip of gold, It is broadly triangular in plan flaring outwards from the apex to the terminal. Both the top and bottom edges are straight. There is a circa 1mm in diameter perforation just below the apex. Length: 16.1mm; Width: 7.2mm; Thickness: 0.2mm; Weight: 0.26g. Discussion: Similar strips of gold with perforations are known from southern England associated with the Bronze Age. Their precise function is uncertain but likely related to some form of ornamentation. Similar examples…

Small strip of gold wound around a strip of gold wire. The gold strip on this peice of 'hack' gold is wound around the bars three times. On the opposite side to the start of the strip is a small perforation. The wire inside appears to be bent over on itself 4/5 times. Date c.2350 - 800BC. Length: 12.2mm, Width: 11mm, Thick: 5.1mm, Weight: 4.4g Discussion: This object is similar to other pieces of wrapped gold dated to the Bronze Age GLO-FE959E and SF-D30D10, although this piece is not ribbed and CORN-0E9443 which is plain. This places the object before 1720 and as the o…

A probably incomplete and bent pointed-oval shaped piece of sheet gold 0.4mm thick, of possible Bronze Age date (2,500-800 BC). The long edges are both jagged and circa one third is folded transversely back on/ under itself. The terminal at the shorter end appears complete. It narrows to a point which is again folded back on itself, perhaps incidentally or perhaps intentionally - it could be interpreted as a hook. The terminal at the opposite end also narrows to a point and is intentionally cut in a straight diagonal on one edge. This terminal is also folded back on itself. As the obj…

An unidentified sheet-gold bag-shaped object, with one closed, rounded end and a narrower open end with a piercing to one face only (apparently). The object is perhaps of Bronze Age date (2,500-800 BC) and related to gold ornaments/ strips known from the Bronze Age of Southern England. Both faces of the object retain traces of decoration in the form of numerous longitudinally-arranged raised ridges of rectangular section, parallel to each other. It isn't possible to determine what the reverse of the sheet-gold looks like. To one edge of the object the sheet is unbroken/ undamaged …

A gold unidentified object possibly of the Bronze Age period, dating to 1500 BC- 800 BC. This consists of a rectangular strip of metal which has been rolled into a cylinder with wrapped overlapping terminals, the item has been subsequently squish resulting in its current flattened form. The outer face of the cylinder is decorated with eight parallel grooves running lengthwise. Discussion: This multi-grooved strip of gold is possibly a bead of potential Bronze Age date. It is similar to several examples recorded through the Portable Antiquities Scheme and dated to the Late Bronze …

TREASURE CASE : 2019 T274. Description: A decorated sheet of gold of probable Bronze Age date, c.1000 - 800 BC. The object is formed of a thin sub-rectangular sheet of gold, folded over at one end. It is not possible to determine if the object is complete or cut down though the latter is likely. The front surface of the sheet is decorated by a series of sub-parallel indented grooves running along its length. Dimensions: Length: 10.4mm; Width: 9.6mm; Thickness: 0.3mm; Weight: 0.4g. A piece of circular-section gold rod of even cross-section and with a pincer cut at either end (giving a D-shaped cross-section at this point). The D-shape is angled into either end and to the reverse of rod is a flat triangular faceting, presumably from the tool (or an accompanying tool) used for the cut. It measures 15.4mm in length and has a diameter at the centre of 2.9mm. The ends measure 3.5x2.6mm and 3.3x2.9mm. The object weighs 1.53g. An apparently complete sheet-gold object of rectangular shape and with a perforation at the centre of each short end, perhaps of Bronze Age date (2,500-800 BC). The object shows signs of being transversely folded or bent multiple times along its length. Both perforations (c.0.8mm diameter) are made from the same side of the object to its opposite side. The object is perhaps related to gold ornaments/ strips known from the Bronze Age of Southern England. The object measures 57.3mm in length, 6.7mm in max.width (varying along the length by 0.5mm), 0.3mm in thickness and weighs 1.58g.

The object is made from a rectangular sheet that would have been curled into a circular hoop. Only a portion of this hoop survives which has then been squashed slightly, but not flat. The strip has potentially been bent intentionally as part of its original design. This includes outer edges which are bent downwards and from which the body domes upwards before curving to another lower point at its middle. This gives the fragment the look of two rings placed above one another. The fragment retains its gold colour has occasional dents and no further decoration. Dimensions: The fragment …

A complete gold sheet strip, dating from the Bronze Age to modern period. The strip would have originally been rectangular in shape, but has been bent and folded over in four different places. Near one of the folds is a slight tear along the edge. At either end of the strip is a circular pierced hole. The corners at each end of the strip are rounded, and the strip narrows slightly. Probable Bronze Age gold strip fragment. This is a semi-worked thickened strip fragment of gold of broadly rectangular shape. The strip has been worked and there are hammer facets visible on the flat surfaces and side margins. One edge has been hammered up and has a projecting margin on one face edge. The strip was broken at one end with a double-grip tool without sharp edges. As a result, there is widening, lateral distortion with thinning at one end, near the break. On one face, the break has created a near flat angled facet, while on the reverse there is a distinct concave curva…

A heavily distorted fragment of gold sheet, probably from a strip or 'ribbon' of Bronze Age date, c. 2350 - 800 BC Description: The object has been folded several times and is creased and torn in several locations, all presumably in antiquity. It is difficult to establish the original form of the object owing to its current condition, but it was probably a band with straight sides, the shape of the terminal cannot be distinguished. The incised linear decoration of the strip can be paralleled on a number of gold strips and 'ribbons' of known and very probable Bronze Age date, for ex…

Description A crumpled and torn fragment of embossed sheet gold. Where top and bottom margins survive these appear to have been turned to form straight edges. The embossed decoration comprises alternate rows of bosses and ridges; some of the bosses are dimpled but this may be a function of compression in the soil. Close to one margin are two perforations situated either side of a jagged tear, through which gold wires have been threaded; these seem to be of flattish and not rounded section. A third perforation, also threaded with gold wire, can be seen near to the torn edge of the p…
