A fragment of gold, likely hack gold from a penannular bracelet of Bronze Age date, possibly c.1100-850 BC. Description: The object is broadly 'axe-shaped' with a sub-circular terminal that tapers to a flat rectangular cross section. This was likely achieved by cutting and hammering. The tapered end has been cut, indicated by a bright rugged cut. The terminal also appears to have been cut from a larger object and then hammered smooth. The gold has a rich, bright yellow colour.  Measurements: Length: 14.77 mm; Width: 7.03 mm; Thickness: 6.43 …

Gold metalworking debris or ingot fragment. An irregularly sub-rectangular fragment of cast gold which has been hammered flat, with one slightly concave edge, all other sides are broken with a crystalline appearance. Reported as from the same location as a socketed axe dated to 1000-800 BC. As one of two items of similar date and recovered from the same find spot, this object technically fulfills criteria for a 'hoard' of two or more metal prehistoric objects found together, and is therefore to be submitted to the Treasure process, ref. 2022 T357. Suggested date: Late Bronze Age, 1000…

Found whilst metal detecting on cultivated land at a depth of 3 inches. Gold ingot of probable Bronze Age date. The find is a slightly bent cylindrical length of gold. One end is complete and flat, the other is slightly twisted and was probably broken by hammering a dent and breaking it across the thinnest place. Hammer marks are still evident.  Dimensions: Dimensions: 56.0mm in length; 3.8mm in diameter or thickness, 9.65g in weight. Discussion: A similar ingot was found in Horsham, West Sussex and is recorded on the PAS database as SUSS-66EEF6 (2008 T329), which was…

A single fragment of gold ‘bar’ of probable prehistoric date. Description: It is snipped (in a pincer-like or ‘chisel-cut’ way) on either end. The object has a sub-hexagonal cross-section. Dimensions: Length: 18mm; Width: 6mm; Thickness: 4.5mm; Weight: 4.32g Metal composition: Non-destructive X-ray fluorescence analysis of a gold bar fragment by the British Museum, indicated a surface composition of approximately 81-83% gold, 14-16% silver, the rest being largely copper. See appended report. Discussion: This fragment is similar in appearance – and, perhap…

Fragment of a gold ingot, rectangular in plan and rhomboidal in profile, and plano-convex in section. The ingot has been cast and then forged or hammered on two sides. The porosity seen in section at one end is created by the casting and then the ingot has been hit once it was cooled and this end section has cracked away. The opposite end has been sheared off with a blunt 'cold' chisel which has caused the end to expand slightly. So this piece may have come from a longer strip which was used and this fragment kept for future use or left to be melted down in a crucible. From the analys…

Fragment of a gold ingot or strip, rectangular in plan and lozenge-shaped in profile, raised into a lip on both of the edges of each face. The raised edges are created when the sides are hammered to keep the them parallel and control the shape before forming the ingot into an armlet or band or ribbon ornament. Both ends are flattened and flanged and have been sheared off with a blunt 'cold' chisel which has caused the ends to expand. So this piece may have come from a longer strip which was used and this fragment kept for future use. A bracelet fragment with similar raised sides has b…

Fragment of a gold finger ingot, plano-convex in plan, and trapezoidal in profile and section. The ingot has been cast and then forged or hammered. The porosity seen in section is created by the casting and the ingot has been hit once it was cooled and this end section has cracked away. A good comparison for this ingot fragment is the Welsh gold ingot published in Green, H.S., A late bronze age gold hoard from Llanarmon-yn-Ial, Clwyd, The Antiquaries Journal 63, 1983, 384-7, p.385, fig.13, no.4 (Brendan O'Connor pers comm) with a similarly rounded end and at the opposite terminal, …

Fragment of a gold ingot or bar which has been folded over and over again from a larger piece of sheet in order to make it thicker and perhaps to beat out any impurities. There are evident layers in section but these have been heat welded together by forging the gold when hot. The fragment has been hammered to thin out the piece at one end and then either snapped or chiselled off in two areas, perhaps to make it into a more rectangular shape, before it was reworked. There are patches of reddish patina, which have also been seen on a strip of gold (2014 T39) that has already undergone …

A fragment of an ingot or, perhaps more likely, an incomplete piece of goldwork from the production process. Half of the fragment has been hammered into a bar with a relatively regular square cross-section. The end appears to have been cut. The remainder of the fragment has not been as highly worked and is a relatively irregular sub-rectangular shape that tapers away to a thinner cross-section. It is not clear whether this end has been cut or whether it has broken. The more highly worked end of the fragment can be compared with a fragment with rectangular profile from Chalvington w…

A gold alloy 'finger shaped' ingot. The ingot is broadly rectangular in plan with a facetted oval / plano-convex shaped cross section. The ingot tapers in width from a bulbous terminal to a slender section which is broken; the break is recent, fresh and unabraded. The bulbous end has a slightly faceted section. There is no evidence of hammer marks or small striations, the surface is slightly pitted through corrosion and abrasion. The ingot is a yellow colour with a smooth surface. Dimensions: The ingot measures: 35.6mm length, 10.7mm maximum width, 7.9mm maximum thickness; and i…

This pale, gold, matt rectangular fragment of gold has four sharp angled straight sides and two jagged broken ends. In places there are shiny striations and one of the side angles is dented. It was found 30m away from a gold strip (SUSS-9B98C6). This fragment of worked gold is not diagnostic of an object type. It is possible that it dates to the Bronze Age and compositional analysis could help define its age. The un-worked state and dimensions of this gold fragment suggests it could date to the Bronze Age and be part of a bar. The fact that it was found 30m away from another gold f…

A fragment of a gold cast and wrought bracelet of Middle or Late Bronze Age date (c. 1500 BC - c. 750 BC). Length: 20.9mm; width: 6.1mm and 4.8mm thick. Weight: 4.98g. The fragment is a short length of rod originally of circular section but now sub-oval in section. Two opposite faces have two distinct facets with hammered marks and taper back to meet in the middle. The two other faces are slightly convex and have fine longitudinal striations, two on one face and one on the other. Each end is formed by an old ragged break. This fragment may have originally been part of a Bronz…

Small, cast gold 'finger-ingot', roughly plano-convex in section. Cut marks are visible (possibly done with a chisel in antiquity). Comparable pieces were found in a hoard from Mooghaun, County Clare, Ireland, where other items are datable to the Late Bronze Age. This example is probably of a similar date.

Cast gold ingot of roughly D-shaped section. A slightly larger but similarly shaped example from Liddington, Wiltshire was declared to be Treasure and is featured in the Treasure Annual Report 1998-9. One datable associated find of ingots of this type is from Mooghaun, Co. Clare, where other items in the hoard are known to date to the Late Bronze Age (the ingots are missing but there are casts). A small Late Bronze Age hoard from Llanarmon-yn-Iâl, Denbighshire contained a similar example of comparable size to the Wembury find. The simplicity of the form and the lack of archaeolog…

Gold fragment of a strip raised into a lip on both of the edges of each face. The flanged end is flattened and has been sheared off with a blunt 'cold' chisel which has caused the end to expand. The other end of the fragment is broken and worn. Treasure report written by Gillian Varndell: Roughly trapezoidal fragment of gold; the broader end is flattened and cut (or flattened and broken off) and there is a rough break at the opposite, narrower end. The long edges have slight flanges, more marked on one face; the 'flange' at the narrow edge is probably a result of breaking.

Short length of rod originally of circular section of about 5 mm diameter. Both ends have been hammered, cut and finally torn. The hammer facets taper back and almost meet in the middle. The thinned blunter ends have steep 'cut' facets and are partly rough-fractured. The undamaged parts of the sides have slight longitudinal facets and fine striations from the original finishing. Such a small and undiagnostic fragment cannot be identified definitively. However, all the features, including the mode of fragmentation and the metal composition are consistent with this being part of a Bro…
