A fragment of Middle Bronze Age (probably Penard phase, c. 1300 - 1100 BC) flange- or bar-twisted gold torc. The fragment is straight with breaks at either end. The torc has a x-shaped cross-section with four flanges, although they twist in such a way as to give a circular cross-section around the flanges. The breaks are quite sharp, suggesting they could be quite recent. The bend is not quite at the centre of the object.

An incomplete sub rectangular strip of flat sheet gold. The front is decorated with 10 longitudinal groves. The lines are all parallel to each other, possibly made with a comb or similar tool. Both ends appear complete. One terminal is rounded and the other is straight. At each terminal is a small, circular hole. The strip has been perforated from the decorated side. The reverse is undecorated. The strip is slightly crumpled and was found folded but was straightened by the finder. It unclear whether the object was folded pre or post-deposition as no photos of the strip were taken by t…

Small strip of gold wound around a strip of gold wire. The gold strip on this peice of 'hack' gold is wound around the bars three times. On the opposite side to the start of the strip is a small perforation. The wire inside appears to be bent over on itself 4/5 times. Date c.2350 - 800BC. Length: 12.2mm, Width: 11mm, Thick: 5.1mm, Weight: 4.4g Discussion: This object is similar to other pieces of wrapped gold dated to the Bronze Age GLO-FE959E and SF-D30D10, although this piece is not ribbed and CORN-0E9443 which is plain. This places the object before 1720 and as the o…

Gold torc, sheet and hack piece wrapped together. An unidentified gold cluster consisting of a Middle Bronze Age spiral twisted torc fragment wrapped around a fold and bent gold sheet. The gold sheet appears to have impressed decoration running in broadly parallel lines down its length. The torc is made of a rod that is square in cross section with accentuated corners created by slightly concave edges. This has been twisted tightly but unevenly across its surviving length. These twists end c.10mm from one terminal where the rod becomes sub-square almost oval in cross section and n…

TREASURE CASE 2016 T662. A distorted annular gold hoop of Bronze Age or Iron Age date. The hoop is formed of cylindrical band of sheet metal that is flat in cross section and with no joins apparent. The band has been folded longitudinally to create a central ridge but the whole object is now bent and distorted. There is no decoration on either side of the band. This object is similar to a so-called' dorsal muff' from an Iron Age torc (see NMS-C6DFC1 / 2007 T119 for comparison), but it may also an ornament (such as a hiar or dress accessory) of Middle to Late Bronze Age date ho…

TREASURE CASE 2015 T460 Description: A fragment of gold foil, incomplete, bent and with a corregated appearance. No decoration visible. Possibly originally oval in plan. There is a hole through the sheet near to the outer egde, but it is unclear if this is purposeful or not and at what period this occured. There is a small tab visible on one of the folds but this may just be due to the folded condition of the object, however both this possible tab and the hole are features seen on some Early Bronze Age 'basket' ornaments, often interpreted as earrings or hair decorations. They are a…

A small gold penannular ring ('hair ring') of Later Bronze Age date. The ring has a sub-circular cross section and the ends of the terminals are flat. The alternating decorative banding would originally have shown as bands of yellow and a paler, silver rich gold; the silver rich bands are now tarnished to a silvery-grey colour. This ornament may be similar to WAW-F3AE27 on which examination at the British Museum was shown to have complex three-tone striping. This ring belongs to a well dated group of ornaments of the Late Bronze Age, circa 1150-750 BC. Several other examples of banded…

A Copper Age (Chalcolithic) gold 'basket ornament', possibly a hair ornament or ear ring, cut from thin gold sheet into an elongated oval shape extending into a narrow tang. The piece has been flattened out and is crinkled both horizontally and vertically.
