Description: Gilded silver incomplete medieval ear-scoop. It has a square-section shaft, decoratively twisted, and is shaped at one end into an oval or drop-shaped bowl. All surfaces were originally gilded, but the gilding has worn off in places. The shaft is bent and broken a little way up; the break is fresh. The piece has an elongated drop shaped (piriform) scoop at the complete end with a rounded end. Medieval or post-medieval silver toilet article. Twisted rectangular-sectioned shaft with a shallow ear-scoop at one end and a flat-sectioned lozengiform terminal forming a toothpick at the other, broken across the tip. The lozengiform terminal is now bent almost parallel with the shaft. Length (unbent) 69mm. Width of scoop 3mm. Maximum width (of lozengiform terminal) 4.5mm. Weight 2.05g. A fragment of a medieval silver ear scoop, part of a toilet implement that often combines with a toothpick at the other end. This example consists of the bowl and base of the stem only. The bowl is tear-drop shaped and 'C' shaped in cross section.The stem has beeen broken off close to the bowl of the ear scoop. It appears to be twisting in cross section at the break which suggests that the stem was probably twisted.

Silver ear scoop. Cast teaspoon with a rounded spatulate terminal to its handle with a thickened end and short central ridge at its back, and with the bowl reduced to a small acorn-shaped scoop. This is all that remains of a bowl whose union with the stem lacked reinforcement, though the stem became thicker towards the bowl. The trimming of the bowl may have taken place after heavy wear, but the smoothed and blunted edges to its stub suggest the conversion of the spoon to a different function. The toothpick is cast in the form of a triangular-sectioned bird's talon (now bent and distorted with point missing) emerging from the fleshy part of the claw which is decorated with tiny stamped annulets. Post medieval silver cosmetic implement, 75mm long and 5mm wide. The object is formed from a single sheet of silver with decorative edges. It has a small circular bowl at one end. Silver ear scoop, bodkin shaped with scoop at one end, baluster-shaped central section and pointed end, flat section. Very thin silver sheet, so perhaps protected in a case with other toilet implements? There is no sign of an attachment loop or hinge linking this object to others in a set. Probably 17th Century.

A cast silver ear scoop, probably of late Medieval-early post-Medieval date. JP Robinson of the BM writes: A Medieval cosmetic implement, which takes the form of a combined ear-scoop and toothpick. It consists of a roughly square-sectioned shaft, which tapers to a pointed end. At the other end a collar of transverse grooves marks the separation of the ear-scoop, which has a triangular-shaped recess. The implement is silver-gilt and dates from the fifteenth or early sixteenth century.

A small, undatable silver scoop, probably an ear scoop, broken at one end (where the suspension loop would have been). It has a tiny tear-shaped bowl which is concave and a slender tapered stem (which tapers towards the bowl), of flattened oval cross-section, with a simple notched moulding near the scoop. The bowl is not set at an angle to the shaft. The maximum thickness of the handle measures 1.39mm and the minimum measures 1.02mm. The maximum width of the handle is 4.24mm and the minimum is 2.92mm.
