Description: Gilded silver incomplete medieval ear-scoop. It has a square-section shaft, decoratively twisted, and is shaped at one end into an oval or drop-shaped bowl. All surfaces were originally gilded, but the gilding has worn off in places. The shaft is bent and broken a little way up; the break is fresh. Dimensions: Surviving length as bent 24.4mm, width of bowl 6.0mm, thickness of bowl 3.0mm, weight 1.27g. Medieval or post-medieval silver toilet article. Twisted rectangular-sectioned shaft with a shallow ear-scoop at one end and a flat-sectioned lozengiform terminal forming a toothpick at the other, broken across the tip. The lozengiform terminal is now bent almost parallel with the shaft. Length (unbent) 69mm. Width of scoop 3mm. Maximum width (of lozengiform terminal) 4.5mm. Weight 2.05g. See similar examples from London (Egan and Pritchard, 2002, 378, fig.251, nos.1758 - 1760) and SOM-B38BA2, DENO-FE6EA0, DENO-BBED67 and DENO-9EE9E7.

Silver toothpick and ear-scoop. The toothpick is cast in the form of a triangular-sectioned bird's talon (now bent and distorted with point missing) emerging from the fleshy part of the claw which is decorated with tiny stamped annulets. This in turn emerges from acanthus leaves with a collared moulding just beyond the mid-point, from which springs the oval-sectioned shaft of the ear-scoop.
