Silver toothpick and ear-scoop. The toothpick is cast in the form of a triangular-sectioned bird's talon (now bent and distorted with point missing) emerging from the fleshy part of the claw which is decorated with tiny stamped annulets. This in turn emerges from acanthus leaves with a collared moulding just beyond the mid-point, from which springs the oval-sectioned shaft of the ear-scoop. There is a circular pierced lug in the centre of the upper edge containing a silver wire loop (10mm). The underside of the shank for the scoop, adjacent to the circular bowl, is stamped with a coun…

A Medieval silver ear scoop and toothpick. The stem of the implement is hexagonal in section, tapering to a blunt point at one terminal, forming the toothpick. The opposite terminal is shaped into a small, shallow bowl forming the ear scoop. The only decoration on the artefact is a pair of perpendicular grooves above the ear scoop, on the outer face and sides of the stem.
