The whetstone is made of a fine silt stone, possibly from the Welsh borders. In plan the whetstone is an elongated trapezoidal shape. The two long side edges are not quite parallel. The wide lower edge is slightly rounded and abraded, but maybe the original edge. The opposite edge is a broken edge. The upper surface of the stone is smooth and the edges rounded, and tapers in depth towards the lower edge. The reverse is a flat face, but is not a smooth as the other face.

Hornfels whetstone, triangular in plan, tapering to one end, and rectangular in profile. The length of one side of the stone has been smoothed and flattened by continuous use, probably sharpening a metal blade. The opposite side is also worked and worn, but has a square section that is recessed, which may have been deliberate or through damage. Nowakowski (1991) illustrates a similar whetstone from Trethellan, Newquay on page 147, Fig.61, No.95, which is dated to the Bronze Age. Ashbee (1999) illustrates similar examples of whetstones with tapering ends from Halangy Down on page 99, F…

Elvan or fine-grained granite whetstone or rubbing stone, semi-circular in plan, rectangular in profile and tear-shaped in section. The length of one side of the stone has been smoothed and flattened by continuous use, probably sharpening a metal blade. The opposite side is also worked and worn, but has an area that is slightly recessed, which may be a result of the pitting of the surface over time. The base of the stone is also slightly hollowed and may have been used as a rubbing stone, to grind grain, rather than blades, initially, and then when it broke in half, it was re-used as a…

Perforated whetstone of rectangular cross-section, made of a fine-grained siltstone. The stone tapers gently to the flat end. The top of the whetstone has been damaged and is irregular. The perforation is regular and has been drilled; it has been positioned slightly off-centre on one face. All four faces illustrate evidence of whetting, but show no obvious sign of being dished through prolonged use.

Wedge of sandstone hone, incomplete, c.80 mm long, max thickness (at break) c.40mm. A hole has been worked in the stone at a diagonal near the broken end, one end of which is on the outer surface and the other one the broken end. It is c.12mm in diameter on the outside but narrows at the middle, and presumable carried on past the break. There are many scratch marks on the surface. It is not unusual to find incomplete or fragments of hones as they wear where they are used so much. The hole was probably for hanging up and this could explain its smooth inner suface - years of hanging on …

Whetstone or hone. It is of fine grained dark stone, so may have served as a finishing hone. It is 65mm in length and has a suspension hole at the top edge. It has pronounced wear on the opposing faces. Hones were used for a long period of time, and this one may date from the 11th century, as one very similar was recovered during excavations in Exeter.

The object is a whetstone or hone. Ward-Perkins (Ward-Perkins J.B. 1940 Medieval Catalogue, Museum of London.) comments whetstones or hones are not usually found on Prehistoric or Roman sites in Britain, therefore suggesting the objects date from the later Early Medieval period onwards. The hole on the recorded example appears to have been hand-made, and therefore is not likely to be of recent date.
The whetstone or hone is made from a fine grained stone, possibly a micaceous schist. It is rectangular in plan with both narrow edges being broken. It varies in thickness, to a maxim…
