Undated possible Whetstone. Sub-rectangular slab of highly siliceous sandstone /quartzite, rounded and slightly battered at one end, heavily flaked at the other. Dimensions 176 x 55 x 30mm. The smooth, almost polished, surface and slightly dished faces suggest that it has been used as a whetstone. Undatable.

A fragment of a probable Early Medieval to Medieval pendant whetstone. The stone is rectangular in both plan and cross-section. At one end it is perforated by a circular hole to secure it via a thong or suspension ring to a strap or belt. The thickness is greater at the perforated end where it tapers in a shallow curve to the broken terminal end. The greater thickness at one end probably derives from the fact that it was held by this end when in use. Incomplete medieval to post-medieval honestone of very hard, fine-grained, pinkish grey micaceous sandstone. At the break the cross-section is trapezoidal, 42 x 19-23mm, and at the end it is rectangular, 64 x 43mm. Three faces are gently concave. The fourth face, a narrow one, is flat but scoured by two deep V-section sharpening grooves which run the full length. There are two shallower grooves on the end. Extant length 79mm. 12th - 17th century.

Incomplete honestone of Norwegian Ragstone, both ends missing, of sub-rectangular cross-section and steadily diminishing thickness from one end to the other. There is a V-sectioned longitudinal groove on one face. Norwegian Ragstone was imported in quantity before the Conquest (Moore, D.T. and Ellis, S.E. in Rogerson and Dallas 1984, 107-11) and in Norfolk remained "the preferred material for hones during the late medieval period" (Mills, J.M. with Moore, D. in Shepherd Popescu 2009, 709). Length 50.5mm. Width 35.5mm. Thickness 13.5 - 7mm. Weight 42g.

Medieval honestone of Norwegian Ragstone. The cross-section is sub-rectangular with the narrow sides quite flat but the two broad faces irregularly convex. Close to the slightly damaged narrower end an encircling V-sectioned groove with overlapping ends was presumably to take a suspension cord (a drilled perforation is the more normal method). Whetstone of uncertain (but far from recent) date, discoidal and sub-circular, in fine grained grey stone. One flat face is smooth, the other less so and with a substantial V-sectioned groove running from edge to edge, set slightly off-centre and deepest at mid-point. There is a narrower V-sectioned groove on the side. Diameter 76 - 82mm. Thickness 24mm. Weight 288g. Maximum width and depth of large groove 16 and 10mm, of small groove 6 and 4mm.

Approx. half of a sub-square sectioned whetstone, of smooth, worn fine-grained schist, thin sedimentary banding is just visable on two opposing sides. Three hone stone fragments, all with both ends missing and perhaps all medieval. Two are very short (35 and 39mm), of trapezoidal cross-section and affected by fire. The larger piece (length 184mm), of irregular ovoid cross-section and probably of Norwegian Ragstone. This stone was imported in quantity before the Conquest (Moore, D.T. and Ellis, S.E. in Rogerson and Dallas 1984, 107-11) and in Norfolk remained "the preferred material for hones during the late medieval period" (Mills, J.M. with Moore, D. in Shepherd Popescu 2009, 709). Combined weight 348g.
