A whetstone or hone made of a fine grained brown grey stone with a high mica content, possibly a schist. The whetstone is 78mm in length, sub rectangular and narrow with rounded ends and oval cross section. The wider end has a drilled hole for suspension. There is an oblique notch across the narrow end which may be post-depositional damage.

It is sub-trapezoidal in shape with tapering sides, and is droplet-shaped in cross-section with a bulbous centre, tapering to blunt points at either end. Both ends are broken, probably in antiquity. Roman to Modern cigar shaped whetstone. The finder's partner is a qualified geologist and says the sharpening stone is made from a "Fine to medium grained, quartz cemented sandstone, probably local millstone grit but its source location in the Bowland stratigraphic sequence is not known. The visible striations are not natural." Falttened areas or facets are typical of stones that have been well used. A piece of a quartz and mica rich sandstone whetstone of probable Post Medieval to Modern date, about AD 1700 - 1900. The stone is broken at both ends and is rectangular in section. It tapers and the two main faces are flat. The regular shape of this stone suggests that it is part of a manufactured hone or scythe stone. When in use, a scythe would have needed sharpening every 15 minutes or so, so hones were vital pieces of equipment for every farm worker. An incomplete, fine-grained sandstone whetstone of unknown date. The object is sub-oval in section and sub-triangular in plan, tapering to a blunt point at one end. The object has broken at one end and the remainder of the whetstone has been lost. Dating of whetstones is difficult as they were used from the Bronze Age to modern times. Fine-grained compacted Sandstone whetstone fragment. A rectangular-section bar hone fragment, tapered towards a slightly worn wedge shape at one end, broken at the other. One of the broader flat sides is lightly dished by wear and all four sides are smoothed with a reasonably sharp aris where each side meets its neighbour. A narrow boat-shaped fragment of stone, rubbed smooth and flat on its opposed broader faces, and to a lesser extent by wear which has left its narrower sides lightly rounded. Broken at both ends, the larger break probably being recent. The use of varied sharpening stones is characteristic of the period between the Roman-era Iron Age and the Middle Saxon period.
