Incomplete sandstone whetstone, used on two sides and one face, so that they are smooth, and broken at one end. Romano-British, judging from the majority of material that it was found with. Carlyon (1987) illustrates a similar example from Carvossa, Probus on page 137, Fig.14, No.4, which is dated from the 1st to the 4th century AD. Quinnell (2004) illustrates a similar example from Trethurgy on page 141, Fig.67, No.18, which is dated from c.AD 150-550.

Whetstone. Very fine-grained purple-brown stone (possibly a sort of metamorphosed slate?). Trapezoidal in plan (tapering towards one end) with bevelled terminals, rectangular sectioned, perforated for suspension towards the wider terminal. Wear along the lower half of the narrower sides. File marks on the bevelled faces of the terminals. The perforation has been bored from both sides. Uncertain date - probably medieval or post medieval. Length 105.42mm, maximum width (perforated end) 14.7mm, minimum width (distal end) 8.3mm, thickness 9.0-9.7mm, diameter of perforation c.4.3mm, weight 32.93g.

A fragment of a Roman to Medieval pendant whetstone. The stone is rectangular in plan and square in cross-section. At one end it is perforated by a circular hole to secure it via a thong or suspension ring to a strap or belt. The material is brown to grey in colour and is possibly a finegrained sandstone or even a form of Schist. The faces are marked with scored lines as the scars of use. Incomplete sandstone probable hone stone, measuring 88.99x(max)70.71x(max)27.89mm and weighing 212.10g. The widest edge is also the thinnest, the incomplete stone being wedge-shaped and triangular in cross-section. Both faces display shallow grooves. Neolithic to Victorian in date, perhaps Prehistoric or Medieval/ Post-Medieval, given that hones between these dates tend to be long and narrow.

A very fine early medieval polished whetstone pendant, made from a light black stone. There is a suspension hole at the top which has been pierced fom both sides to give a clean even finish. There are numerous shallow linear scores visible on both sides of the whetstone. This whetstone was probably used for the final finishing sharpening rather than the initial sharpening. The whetstone measures 76.50mm long, 13.91mm wide and 6.89mm thick. It weighs 15 grams.

A rectangular length of lightweight, dark, fine-grained stone that has probably been used as a whetstone (hone or sharpening stone) as there are a number of shallow grooves on three of the surfaces. It is difficult to date with certainty but it probably dates from the Early-Medieval to Medieval periods. It is pierced at one end and a copper-alloy rivet remains in the piercing. It is sub-rectangular in shape, with tapering sides. The cross-section is sub-rectangular. Five sides are finely smoothed, with one edge demonstrating a rough fracture. One end of a whetstone made of well cemented and sorted fine grain sandstone. The whetstone is sub-square in section with rounded corners and an bar shape with one angled end and irregular broken end. Three sides seem smoother from use. A hone stone, of possible Anglo-Saxon to Medieval date. It is approximately rectangular, 41.79mm in length and 14.54mm in width tapering to one terminal. This is worn with rounded edges but broken off at the tip, and is perforated with a circular hole 6mm from the terminal edge. The hone is 5.4mm in thickness here, but tapers to 2.3mm at the opposite terminal, the edge of which is also worn.Both sides have been worn smooth. The hone weighs 4.37g.
