Incomplete whetstone. The stone is rectangular in cross section, measuring 54mm x 20mm x 7mm and tapers to 8mm x 14mm. Both ends are broken and sides of the whetstone are highly worn. The 'fibrous' structure of the this whetstone suggests that it is made from schist and is likely to imported.

An incomplete whetstone of probable early-medieval to medieval date (c. AD 800 - 1400). Description: The whetstone is formed from a very fine-grained, sedimentary, mica-rich stone. It is sub-trapezoidal in plan with parallel sides and is sub-rectangular in cross section. Both ends are broken, probably in antiquity. The regular round section may suggest it was turned on a lathe, and/or used fitted to a spindle. Spiral gouges may have been inflicted after such use. The object retains a regular round section, which could suggest it was mounted on a turning axle in a frame when in use. Suggested date: Post-Medieval to Modern, 1700-1900. Fine Grained Moderately Compacted Sandstone Whetstone fragment. Segment broken from a wheel-mounted whetstone of estimated external diameter 300mm. Both sides have a broad flat rim. The central aperture had an estimated diameter of 140mm, suggesting an axle engaged another wooden element in contact with the stone itself to make it lighter and easier to turn. Suggested date: Modern, 1850-1950. This object was kindly identified by Sandra Firth, Hazel West and Helen Fry of the North Lincolnshire Pottery Research Group. Thickness: 40mm, Weight: 470gms.

A rectangular length of lightweight, dark, fine-grained stone that has probably been used as a whetstone (hone or sharpening stone) as there are a number of shallow grooves on three of the surfaces. It is difficult to date with certainty but it probably dates from the Early-Medieval to Medieval periods. It is pierced at one end and a copper-alloy rivet remains in the piercing. At each end of the rivet is a small section of copper-alloy plate, probably forming a suspension mount, most of which has broken away in antiquity and is missing. A very large whetstone, measuring 398mm x 45mm x 30mm. The whetstone is rectangular in plan and also in cross-section. The whetstone is a very fine grained light brown-grey colour, originally discovered in three pieces at the same place and later restored by the finder. The whetstone is very smooth and worn on three faces only. The fourth face is less smooth and has a different patina to the rest of the object, having a dark grey-brown patina extending approximately 3/4ths of the length.
