A complete whetstone probably dating to the early-medieval period. The whetstone is rectilinear in plan and relatively square in section. One end narrows slightly, each end is angled slightly, parallel to each other. The stone is a fine-grained, micaceous rock, probably schistose in origin. These items form part of a collection of 60 sherds of Roman and Medieval pottery and other finds that were submitted for identification in November 2009. The two whetstones that were submitted are, like the nails very hard to date without contextual information. Whetstones have been in use for many hundreds of years. On whetstone is perforated, probably for suspension; this practice was not common during the Roman period. These whetstones may date anywhere from the post Roman period (AD 410) into the post-medieval period.

An incomplete hone stone of uncertain date. It is formed from a grey schist and terminates in old breaks towards its base. The hone is triangular in form and section, with flattened and slightly rounded suspension end and flaring base. At the suspension end is a drilled central circular aperture that is slightly wider in diameter on one face than the other. A whetstone or hone which is 117.3mm long, 52.7mm wide and 34.6mm thick. The stone is sub-rectangular in plan with rounded corners. It appears to be a water worn pebble which has not been deliberately shaped. One face has been used as a whetstone though. A stone hone of unknown date. The sub-rectangular hone is slightly waisted in the centre and is probably incomplete. It is made from a brown hard mud or siltstone with fine grains and is smooth to touch. The sides of the hone have silvery inclusions and black markings that are not present on the front or back face. A very fine early medieval polished whetstone pendant, made from a light black stone. There is a suspension hole at the top which has been pierced fom both sides to give a clean even finish. There are numerous shallow linear scores visible on both sides of the whetstone. This whetstone was probably used for the final finishing sharpening rather than the initial sharpening. The whetstone measures 76.50mm long, 13.91mm wide and 6.89mm thick. It weighs 15 grams.

A rectangular length of lightweight, dark, fine-grained stone that has probably been used as a whetstone (hone or sharpening stone) as there are a number of shallow grooves on three of the surfaces. It is difficult to date with certainty but it probably dates from the Early-Medieval to Medieval periods. It is pierced at one end and a copper-alloy rivet remains in the piercing. A hone stone, of possible Anglo-Saxon to Medieval date. It is approximately rectangular, 41.79mm in length and 14.54mm in width tapering to one terminal. This is worn with rounded edges but broken off at the tip, and is perforated with a circular hole 6mm from the terminal edge. The hone is 5.4mm in thickness here, but tapers to 2.3mm at the opposite terminal, the edge of which is also worn.Both sides have been worn smooth. The hone weighs 4.37g. Complete Anglo-Scandinavian schist hone. The dark grey coloured hone is sub-rectangular in plan, though the one end is quite rounded. In cross section the hone is sub-triangular and becomes flatter near the rounded end. The thicker end has a circular perforation. The surface of the hone is uneven with scratches and flaking edges. The length is 41.8mm, the width is 9.5mm, the maximum thickness is 7.0mm and the weight is 4.27g.

A possible Middle Saxon object whetstone. The object is smaller than most whetstones, perhaps indicating it was used for fine working of objects. A fragment of whetstone or hone, probably early-medieval to medieval in date. The whetstone has been manufactured from very fine-grained, blue-greymudstone, similar to the Jurassic rocks found on the coast of North Yorkshire. It is sub-triangular in plan and sub-oval in section. It is broken across its widest part and shows the very fine internal structure of the stone. The narrow end is complete apart from some minor post-depositional damage. The outer surfaces are very smooth and show some flat facets, probably as a result of the blade-sharpening process.
