A possible early medieval to post medieval whetstone, dating from AD 800-1400.  The object is a long rectangular shape, narrowing slightly at one end. At the wider end it is rounded, and missing one corner. There is a circular perforation at this end, it has been drilled from both sides. At the opposite narrower end the object has a flat edge, from the centre of this projects a triangular point. There are scratches across the body of the object. It is a dark brown colour, and measures 58.3mm in length, 12.9mm in maximum width, 6.2mm in maximum thickness, and weighs 11.42g.  …

Fragment of a late Saxon or medieval Norwegian ragstone hone both ends missing, parts of two faces and of one straight side only. Extant length 47.5mm, thickness 5 - 6.5mm. Weight 8.9g. Norwegian Ragstone was imported in quantity before the Conquest (Moore, D.T. and Ellis, S.E. in Rogerson and Dallas 1984, 107-11) and in Norfolk remained "the preferred material for hones during the late medieval period" (Mills, J.M. with Moore, D. in Shepherd Popescu 2009, 709). 10th - 15th century.

A complete but broken Medieval whetstone dating to c. AD 1050-1250. The whetstone is formed from a blue/grey micaceous schist, now in two pieces. It is sub-trapezoidal in plan with a flat top and tapering sides to a rounded tip. An incomplete fine-grained micaceous stone whetstone or hone. It is sub-rectangular in shape with (worn) breaks at both short ends, revealing a D-shaped cross-section. It narrows from 20.1x14.8mm at one break to 14.6x11.6mm at the other, over a length of 76.3mm. The stone is grey to the flat underside but otherwise brown in colour with lines of silvery inclusions running through it. These appear as dark grey longitudinal striations on the brown surface.
