Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete stone object, a probable whetstone or hone stone of unknown date. The object is formed from a finely grained light brown stone with a few micaceous inclusions. It is rectangular, smooth, with rounded edges, as if manufactured, but has breaks at both ends, one at an angle to the whole block, the other a more or less straight break. It has clearly been used to sharpen different blades or other sharp objects. There is a deep, but narrow, longitudinal scar at one end of a long broad surface, suggesting repeated use to sharpen there, and a se…

A waterworn and polished stone that may have been used as whetstone or hone stone, at an unknown date. The stone is broadly rectangular in pln and cross-section, though it is taller at one end, and that thcker end then tapers to a rounded point. The top and one side are flattened and there are faint striations, suggesting the stone may have been used. The other side is rougher and is probably natural. The base is smooth but undulating with some visible striations. The stone is fine textured and homogenous apart from the rougher face which has apparent inclusions of harder material that…

A stone tool, possibly used as a scraper or whetstone. It is sub rectangular in shape but one of the long sides extends to form a point with the short side, the other short end is rounded. All four sides narrow to a point, which thus runs around the circumference of the object. It is not knapped but ground, the stone is possibly granite. It has an even brown patina with a granular appearance all over the surface. Dating this type of implement is difficult as whetstones were in use over a long period. An object with a similar 'bladed' side is PUBLIC-BD3717 and NLM-47EC…

Fragment of a large sub-rectangular sectioned whetstone, of fine-grained non micaceous mid grey stone with lighter, linier streaks throughout, both ends are broken, the surviving section appears to be the centre with all sides constricted from use wear, one only subtlety worn, one face has a prominent, rounded groove that runs down the length on the centre, this must have been wear from one specialised form of grinding or sharpening.

One half of a whetstone of fine-grained non micaceous mid-grey stone, perforated at one end by a drilled hole with a slightly “hourglass” cross section, this originally made the recorder think that this may have been a Beaker period stone wrist bracer with a single hole, further research has shown many of the whetstones from the Early Medieval/Medieval period had similar profiled perforations and is now much more likely to be of this later date and function. One lateral edge and the end with the perforation is ground to a thin, pointed edge, the opposing side is flat, almos…
