A sandstone, possibly greywacke, whetstone with damaged end. 146 mm in length, 60 mm in width, 30 mm in thickness and 482.1 g in weight. The whetstone is sub-rectangular in plan and in profile and oval in section. Made from a beach pebble, all the edges are rounded, and the surfaces of the implement are generally smooth. An incomplete whetstone of probable early-medieval date (c. AD 800 - 1100). Description: The whetstone is formed from a very fine-grained, sedimentary, mica-rich stone. It is sub-trapezoidal in plan with tapering sides and is trapezoidal in cross section although there is significant post-depositional damage that has changed its profile. A sandstone whetstone of uncertain date, possibly Roman. It is sub-rectangular in plan and section. The whetstone has four, possibly five grinding surfaces which are saddle-like; it has sustained plough damage which has given it two uneven sides. It is a light to mid-brown medium to coarse sandstone. It measures 98.32mm in length, 60.82mm wide and weighs 648.9grams.

Schist, possibly Norwegian Possible Hone fragment. Small fragment from a mullion of schist. The angled end and part of one side appear smoothed; other surfaces are probably broken. If the identification is sustained, this could be a small piece of a medieval whetstone; the English market for hones was dominated by Norwegian schists through the Medieval period. Fine Grained Moderately Compacted Sandstone Whetstone fragment. Segment broken from a wheel-mounted whetstone of estimated external diameter 300mm. Both sides have a broad flat rim. The central aperture had an estimated diameter of 140mm, suggesting an axle engaged another wooden element in contact with the stone itself to make it lighter and easier to turn. Suggested date: Modern, 1850-1950. This object was kindly identified by Sandra Firth, Hazel West and Helen Fry of the North Lincolnshire Pottery Research Group. Thickness: 40mm, Weight: 470gms.

Compacted Sandstone water rolled cobble, probable whetstone; a sparkling surface indicates the presence of mica or other abrasive constituents in a sandy matrix, and hence suitability as a sharpening stone. This large sub-triangular flat-sided stone has one large flat surface smoothed and dished by wear. Other surfaces are unmodified, though scratches from plough strike appear on all. A fragment of probable whetstone or hone of uncertain dating (from the Roman period onwards, c.AD 43 to 1800). It is cylindrical in shape with (broken) projections on two adjacent 'faces'; approximately one third of the cylinder shape is also missing. It measures 33.0mm in length, 34.6mm in diameter, 39.5mm in width, 34.5mm in thickness and weighs 48.86g. The stone is a fine grained sandstone with micaceous inclusions and a metallic black sheen to the outside edge.

Approx. half of a sub-square sectioned whetstone, of smooth, worn fine-grained schist, thin sedimentary banding is just visable on two opposing sides. The end changes section to almost triangular, with deeply incised "V" at a slight angle on one face. The very end has fine, parrallel scratches from use. C. 800 to 1100 AD.

A large fragment of whetstone, which is probably early-medieval in date. Numberous whetstones made in this material have been found in the East Ridings of Yorkshire in Viking contexts. The stone from which the whetstone has been carved is a fine-grained stone such as Mica Schist, sourced in Scandinavia. The stone has been chipped and ground into the whetstone shape and has large chamfered edges. The chamfered edges are still very obvious. Weight: 85g.
