A fragment of whetstone of unknown date. Description: The object is made from a fine-grained, quartz-rich sandstone, is sub-square in section and broken across both ends. There is also some post-depositional damage to all surfaces. Measurements: Length 54.32mm: Width 28.31mm: Thickness 25.87mm: Weight 64.48g Discussion: Dating of whetstones is difficult as they were used from the later Iron Age to modern times. The location and associated finds suggest an early-medieval to early post-medieval date.

Grey composite stone whetstone fragment. A fragment of a cylindrical sharpening stone, with one narrow longitudinal flattened face from use, subsequently broken raggedly at both ends and bearing deep surface chips. The composite material appears glittering and sandy in its texture, is almost certainly artificially formed to this shape, and may also have been absorbent if treated with oil. The top of the object is pierced and demarcated from the rest of the object by horizontal grooves that run around the top and the bottom of the piercing. Fine-grained compacted Sandstone whetstone, as kindly identified by the finder. A narrow boat-shaped fragment of stone, rubbed smooth and flat on its opposed broader faces, and to a lesser extent by wear which has left its narrower sides lightly rounded. Broken at both ends, the larger break probably being recent. The use of varied sharpening stones is characteristic of the period between the Roman-era Iron Age and the Middle Saxon period. It is cylindrical in shape with (broken) projections on two adjacent 'faces'; approximately one third of the cylinder shape is also missing.
