A fragment of a conical whetstone of probable post-medieval date. The object is made from a quartz-rich, fine-grained sandstone, is sub-circular in section and probably lathe-turned. It is broken at both ends. These type of whetstones were often used on a spindle, but this does not appear to be the case with this example as there are numerous flat spots along its length from being drawn lengthways across a blade. Suggested date is post-medieval, AD1600-1800. The object is 51.72mm in length and 37.1mm, tapering to 32.42mm, in diameter. It weighs 96gms.

Roman to Modern cigar shaped whetstone. The finder's partner is a qualified geologist and says the sharpening stone is made from a "Fine to medium grained, quartz cemented sandstone, probably local millstone grit but its source location in the Bowland stratigraphic sequence is not known. The visible striations are not natural." Falttened areas or facets are typical of stones that have been well used. It tapers and the two main faces are flat. The regular shape of this stone suggests that it is part of a manufactured hone or scythe stone. When in use, a scythe would have needed sharpening every 15 minutes or so, so hones were vital pieces of equipment for every farm worker. Dark grey dense fine grained and layered stone: whetstone fragment. A thin bar with rounded slightly convergent edges and broad flat sides, both smoothed by wear and randomly scratched on one side, broken at both its ends. The width should probably suggest use in a kitchen or workshop, and the thickness may suggest heavy use leading to thinning and eventual breakage of the object. There are worn facets along the sides.The regular shape of this stone suggests that it is part of a manufactured hone or scythe stone. When in use, a scythe would have needed sharpening every 15 minutes or so, so hones were vital pieces of equipment for every farm worker.  Measurements are; length 88.8mm, width 33.5mm, thickness 19.5mm and weight 84.17g.

Heavy, round stone, possibly granite. While the underside is round and has a very rough surface, the top is very smooth and almost indented. It is very likely that the stone has been used as a whetstone for, possibly, arrowheads, smaller spearheads, knives, axe blades, etc. However, the date of Late Neolithic/Early Bronze Age has only been given tentatively - it may have been much younger than that. Since it was an unassociated find, it is difficult to attach a clear date to it.

Incomplete sandstone probable hone stone, measuring 88.99x(max)70.71x(max)27.89mm and weighing 212.10g. The widest edge is also the thinnest, the incomplete stone being wedge-shaped and triangular in cross-section. Both faces display shallow grooves. Neolithic to Victorian in date, perhaps Prehistoric or Medieval/ Post-Medieval, given that hones between these dates tend to be long and narrow.

A rectangular block of hard, fine-grained, dark grey stone, probably used for honing blades. There are scratches and shallow grooves on all faces of the stone and one face has a more deeply incised transverse groove. It is 82.3mm in length, 24.5mm wide, and 25.2mm thick. It weighs 129.3gm. Hone stones have been used throughout history, but the regularity of this one suggests that is may have been machine cut, and so it is probably 19th or 20th century in date. Fine Grained Moderately Compacted Sandstone Whetstone fragment. Segment broken from a wheel-mounted whetstone of estimated external diameter 300mm. Both sides have a broad flat rim. The central aperture had an estimated diameter of 140mm, suggesting an axle engaged another wooden element in contact with the stone itself to make it lighter and easier to turn. Suggested date: Modern, 1850-1950. This object was kindly identified by Sandra Firth, Hazel West and Helen Fry of the North Lincolnshire Pottery Research Group. Thickness: 40mm, Weight: 470gms.

A fragment of a cylindrical sharpening stone, with one narrow longitudinal flattened face from use, subsequently broken raggedly at both ends and bearing deep surface chips.
