a medieval stone hone. It is a complete rectangular hone 53.03mm long and 13.65mm wide at one terminal. It tapers to 9.52mm at the opposite terminal, which is rounded. A circular hole pierces through the hone at 12.51mm from the wider terminal.With the hole uppermost, the left side of the hone is worn, where it has been used for sharpening a blade. It weighs 13.25g. Similar hones have been found in a fourteenth century context, as at York and Winchester (refs. below) but this type of hone could be of any date from the tenth to fifteenth centuries.

Probably a complete Medieval slate whetstone. The light grey coloured whetstone is sub-rectangular in plan, sub-triangular in cross section and expands in thickness from one end. The thinner end has a circular perforation with a diameter of 5.1mm. The surface of the hone is uneven with scratches and broken edges. The length is 141.0mm, the maximum width is 30.2mm, the maximum thickness is 15.0mm and the weight is 107.03g

A very large whetstone, measuring 398mm x 45mm x 30mm. The whetstone is rectangular in plan and also in cross-section. The whetstone is a very fine grained light brown-grey colour, originally discovered in three pieces at the same place and later restored by the finder. The whetstone is very smooth and worn on three faces only. The fourth face is less smooth and has a different patina to the rest of the object, having a dark grey-brown patina extending approximately 3/4ths of the length.

Whetstone. Very fine-grained purple-brown stone (possibly a sort of metamorphosed slate?). Trapezoidal in plan (tapering towards one end) with bevelled terminals, rectangular sectioned, perforated for suspension towards the wider terminal. Wear along the lower half of the narrower sides. File marks on the bevelled faces of the terminals. The perforation has been bored from both sides. Uncertain date - probably medieval or post medieval. Length 105.42mm, maximum width (perforated end) 14.7mm, minimum width (distal end) 8.3mm, thickness 9.0-9.7mm, diameter of perforation c.4.3mm, weight 32.93g.

A fragment of a Roman to Medieval pendant whetstone. The stone is rectangular in plan and square in cross-section. At one end it is perforated by a circular hole to secure it via a thong or suspension ring to a strap or belt. The material is brown to grey in colour and is possibly a finegrained sandstone or even a form of Schist. The faces are marked with scored lines as the scars of use. a complete whetstone of unknown date. It is a light grey stone with a little mica, rectangular in shape with a flattened oval cross-section at the terminals, which are both flat. There are two flat, rectangular areas, each with significant patches of wear, one near each terminal. They have been worked so as to create an angle of 45 degrees between them, resulting in an uworked central bulbous area. The whetstone measures 86.86mm in length and is 20.6mm wide.
