A complete dolorite whetstone, of uncertain dating but probably Neolithic to Modern (3,300 BC to AD 1900). Top and bottom of the whetstone are pointed oval shapes, whereas the sides are more boat shaped, with one end taller than the other. The upper surface of the whetstone is an elognated pointed oval shape, with a sloping surface. Polishing is present on the surface, along with multiple parallel striations. A possible whetstone of uncertain date. The object is triangular in plan, with a broken point. Composed of a dense, dark grey sedimentary stone, all surfaces and edges are smooth. One surface is very flat, and has straight linear scratches and lines suggestive of use sharpening metal edges. Fine-grained compacted Sandstone whetstone, as kindly identified by the finder. A narrow boat-shaped fragment of stone, rubbed smooth and flat on its opposed broader faces, and to a lesser extent by wear which has left its narrower sides lightly rounded. Broken at both ends, the larger break probably being recent. The use of varied sharpening stones is characteristic of the period between the Roman-era Iron Age and the Middle Saxon period. It is cylindrical in shape with (broken) projections on two adjacent 'faces'; approximately one third of the cylinder shape is also missing. It measures 33.0mm in length, 34.6mm in diameter, 39.5mm in width, 34.5mm in thickness and weighs 48.86g. The stone is a fine grained sandstone with micaceous inclusions and a metallic black sheen to the outside edge.
