A possible worn piece of a quartz and mica rich sandstone whetstone of probable Post Medieval to Modern date, about AD 1700 - 1900. The stone is rounded at both ends and is oval in section. There are worn facets along the sides. The regular shape of this stone suggests that it is part of a manufactured hone or scythe stone. When in use, a scythe would have needed sharpening every 15 minutes or so, so hones were vital pieces of equipment for every farm worker.  Measurements are; length 88.8mm, width 33.5mm, thickness 19.5mm and weight 84.17g.

A piece of a quartz and mica rich sandstone whetstone of probable Post Medieval to Modern date, about AD 1700 - 1900. The stone is broken at both ends and is rectangular in section. It tapers and the two main faces are flat. The regular shape of this stone suggests that it is part of a manufactured hone or scythe stone. When in use, a scythe would have needed sharpening every 15 minutes or so, so hones were vital pieces of equipment for every farm worker. This example does not appear to have been used very much before it was lost, and the faces are not concave. It is 50.4mm long, 28.6…

Roman to Modern cigar shaped whetstone. The finder's partner is a qualified geologist and says the sharpening stone is made from a "Fine to medium grained, quartz cemented sandstone, probably local millstone grit but its source location in the Bowland stratigraphic sequence is not known. The visible striations are not natural." Falttened areas or facets are typical of stones that have been well used. The tapered elongated cylindrical shape is typical of those used for sharpening scythes and sickles. Similar stones in modern materials are still in production (see attached image). Sickl…

Dark grey dense fine grained and layered stone: whetstone fragment. A thin bar with rounded slightly convergent edges and broad flat sides, both smoothed by wear and randomly scratched on one side, broken at both its ends. The width should probably suggest use in a kitchen or workshop, and the thickness may suggest heavy use leading to thinning and eventual breakage of the object. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1700-1900. Length: 26.9mm, Width: 48.9mm, Thickness: 8.1mm, Weight: 25.80gms.

An incomplete object made of sandstone, possibly a whetstone (hone stone) of Medieval to Modern date. The object is sub-rectangular. On one side, towards one of the shorter edges, there is a large rounded protrusion that may have been a handle. The object is broken at the opposite end to the protrusion. There are faint traces of lines running around the edge of the object that may have been a form of decoration or natural feature in the rock. There are marks across the surface on all sides which may have been caused by a blade being sharpend on the object, suggesting that this is a…

A complete rectangular whetstone, which is very difficult to date, but is most likely to date from the Roman-post-medival period, i.e. c. AD43-1800. The stone is rectangular in shape and about 14.9mm thick. The surfaces are smooth, but the smoothest part are the sides which were probably used for resharpening blades of knives, axes and other tools. Stray finds of whetstones are notoriously difficult to date and only very few found out of context can be dated to, e.g. the Roman or medieval period because of their shape and/or a perforation for suspension. This whetstone does not bear a…

Small stone fragment, possibly the remains of a whetstone. Date uncertain. The surfaces are too worn and damaged to be abolutely certain that this was, indeed, an artefact. It may be natural. It is was a whetstone, the date range would be 2000BC-AD1900, as single stray finds of simple whetstones are notoriously difficult to date.

Stone: Fine grained sandstone with tiny ?mica flecks and black grains. Possibly Coal Measures Sandstone (non-specialist identification by MF). Hone. Tapered cylindrical hone, broken at both ends. The regular round section may suggest it was turned on a lathe, and/or used fitted to a spindle. Spiral gouges may have been inflicted after such use. Suggested date: Post-Medieval to Modern, 1600-1900. Length: 140.47mm, Diameter: 37.47mm, Weight: 240gms.

A fragment of a sandstone "Scythe stone" of unknown date, but probably from the Post medieval period. The stone would have been cylindrical but the ends and one side are broken. It is 87.6mm long, 43.7mm wide and 32.5mm thick. It tapers slightly towards one end which is extensively damaged making the shape of the section difficult to determine. This stone was initially thought to be a hone stone, but on further consideration it was realised that this use would produce a rectangular stone with concave sides where the tool has been rubbed to sharpen it, not the neat circular shape evide…
