An incomplete probable whetstone or hone, which could be of Roman to Modern date. The stone is a fine grained grey silt- or mudstone and has clearly been intentionally shaped. All four sides are long and sub-triangular, each triangle alternately tapering in a different direction, meaning that each end expands at an angle to the other. There is a break at each end. A slight depression in the centre of one of these breaks suggests that the stone may have been perforated originally. Medieval whetstone, 49mm long and 15mm wide. The object is made from a metamorphic rock and has a sub rectangular form with rounded edges, worn down from use. It has a 10mm hole in the centre of one end. It matches one in Allan 1984, 31 and 295.
