Large hone stone. Roughly rectangular in section, with evidence of heavy or long-term use. Material is a fine-grained micaceous garnet schist (almost certainly from the same imported source as other local Honestones in the Yorkshire Museum collection) suggesting a late Anglo-Scandinavian date. The heavy wear may suggest prolonged use into the medieval period.

A complete whetstone probably dating to the early-medieval period. The whetstone is rectilinear in plan and relatively square in section. One end narrows slightly, each end is angled slightly, parallel to each other. The stone is a fine-grained, micaceous rock, probably schistose in origin. An incomplete whetstone of probableEarly-Medieval date. The stone is cylindrical in profile and circular in section constructed from a fine grained sandstone with a high mica component. One end of the object appears to terminate in an old break, all other surfaces are smoothed. While this form of whetstone is fairly ubiquitous throughout history its association with securely dated Early-Medieval material would suggest a comparable date for this example.

A whetstone or hone which is 117.3mm long, 52.7mm wide and 34.6mm thick. The stone is sub-rectangular in plan with rounded corners. It appears to be a water worn pebble which has not been deliberately shaped. One face has been used as a whetstone though. A rectangular length of lightweight, dark, fine-grained stone that has probably been used as a whetstone (hone or sharpening stone) as there are a number of shallow grooves on three of the surfaces. The whetstone has been manufactured from very fine-grained, blue-greymudstone, similar to the Jurassic rocks found on the coast of North Yorkshire. It is sub-triangular in plan and sub-oval in section. It is broken across its widest part and shows the very fine internal structure of the stone. One half of a whetstone of fine-grained non micaceous mid-grey stone, perforated at one end by a drilled hole with a slightly “hourglass” cross section, this originally made the recorder think that this may have been a Beaker period stone wrist bracer with a single hole, further research has shown many of the whetstones from the Early Medieval/Medieval period had similar profiled perforations and is now much more likely to be of this later date and function. A stone hone of unknown date. The sub-rectangular hone is slightly waisted in the centre and is probably incomplete. It is made from a brown hard mud or siltstone with fine grains and is smooth to touch. The sides of the hone have silvery inclusions and black markings that are not present on the front or back face. These items form part of a collection of 60 sherds of Roman and Medieval pottery and other finds that were submitted for identification in November 2009. The two whetstones that were submitted are, like the nails very hard to date without contextual information. Whetstones have been in use for many hundreds of years. On whetstone is perforated, probably for suspension; this practice was not common during the Roman period. These whetstones may date anywhere from the post Roman period (AD 410) into the post-medieval period.

A very fine early medieval polished whetstone pendant, made from a light black stone. There is a suspension hole at the top which has been pierced fom both sides to give a clean even finish. There are numerous shallow linear scores visible on both sides of the whetstone. This whetstone was probably used for the final finishing sharpening rather than the initial sharpening. The whetstone measures 76.50mm long, 13.91mm wide and 6.89mm thick. It weighs 15 grams.
