Object type: GAMING PIECE
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Doncaster
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A stone possible gaming piece of possible Roman date, AD 43 - 410. The object is formed from a very smooth circular pebble, identified by the finder as Cornish greenstone. The pebble has two shallowly convex faces and rounded sides. It would have functioned well as a counter or gaming piece. It may have been naturally formed but collected for use as a playing piece. Measurements are; diameter 24.3mm, thickness 7.5mm and weight 6.74g. The stone is dark brown, fine grained and smooth, but with a slightly pitted surface under magnification. There appears to be a high quartz content.…

County: North Yorkshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A perforated stone which is probably a geological phenomenon rather than an archaeological one. It is a fine grained grey stone with sparse mica inclusions and occasional pockets of a dark grey soft and powdery material. The stone is oval in plan, with smooth and fairly flat faces and slightly rounded sides. It is water worn. In the centre is a sub-circular irregular hole right through the cobble. The hole has not been drilled - it is not circular, and the inside wall has vertical striations and ridges. These do not give a magnetic response despite some orange staining. The uneven insi…

A complete stone object, possibly a loom weight for a warp weighted loom of uncertain date, probably Roman to Medieval. The weight, made from a fine grained light yellow stone, is a rounded cobble which is oval in plan. The edges are rounded. There is a sub-circular off-centre perforation of about 9mm diameter. Measurements are; length 67.2mm, width 51.8mm, thickness 45.4mm and weigh 154.50g. Loom weights were used to keep the vertical threads, or warp, tight on a loom during weaving while the horizontal thread, or weft, was passed through the warp. This object was fou…

A waterworn and polished stone that may have been used as whetstone or hone stone, at an unknown date. The stone is broadly rectangular in pln and cross-section, though it is taller at one end, and that thcker end then tapers to a rounded point. The top and one side are flattened and there are faint striations, suggesting the stone may have been used. The other side is rougher and is probably natural. The base is smooth but undulating with some visible striations. The stone is fine textured and homogenous apart from the rougher face which has apparent inclusions of harder material that…

An incomplete and damaged polished stone axehead of Neolithic date, 4000 - 2200 BC. The axe has a narrow btt with is trunctaed by a break. The sides are straight and flaring to the convex cutting edge, making the axe broadly triangular in plan. It is an irregular pointed oval in cross-section, and more lozenge shaped in cross-section at the break. The surface of the axe is flaked but many of these removals are probably later damage, as there are small areas of the polished surface surviving at the cutting end on both faces. The axe may only have been polished at the cutting end. The st…

A waterworn stone pebble of quartzite with distinctive natural markings in the form of dark bands across the stone at right angles. The pebble is natural, but exotic to the location where it was found. It was probably brought to the site by human activity. The rounded stone is a yellow grey colour. Stephen Poole (geologist) describes the dark lines as caused by fluid getting into the bedding plane lines. The stone is eyecatching and was probably intentionally selected and placed, though at what date is unknown. It was found about 30m from a bowl barrow. It is 68.6mm long, 52.5mm wide a…

A fragment of slate tablet, or writing slate of late Post medieval to modern, date, about AD 1850 - 1950.  The fragment has a chapfered edge, probably indicating it was made in a factory and designed to have a wooden frame applied to the edge. Frames are thought to have been routinely added to slates from the mid 19th century (Shaffrey, 2022, Finds Reserach Group Datasheet 56). The slate is also marked with guidelines. A fragment of stone or lead ore (galena), probably from a lead mining operation of uncertain date, Roman to Medieval, AD 43 - 1600. A possible worn piece of a quartz and mica rich sandstone whetstone of probable Post Medieval to Modern date, about AD 1700 - 1900. The stone is rounded at both ends and is oval in section. There are worn facets along the sides. The regular shape of this stone suggests that it is part of a manufactured hone or scythe stone. When in use, a scythe would have needed sharpening every 15 minutes or so, so hones were vital pieces of equipment for every farm worker.  Measurements are; length 88.8mm, width 33.5mm, thickness 19.5mm and weight 84.17g.
