Late Saxon example from Thetford (Rogerson and Dallas 1984, fig.148, no.4) and broadly similar but more deeply grooved Middle Saxon example from grave 28 at Harford Farm (Penn 2000, 29 and fig.94, no.4 and plate VI).

Incomplete whetstone. The stone is rectangular in cross section, measuring 54mm x 20mm x 7mm and tapers to 8mm x 14mm. Both ends are broken and sides of the whetstone are highly worn. The 'fibrous' structure of the this whetstone suggests that it is made from schist and is likely to imported.

Large hone stone. Roughly rectangular in section, with evidence of heavy or long-term use. Material is a fine-grained micaceous garnet schist (almost certainly from the same imported source as other local Honestones in the Yorkshire Museum collection) suggesting a late Anglo-Scandinavian date. The heavy wear may suggest prolonged use into the medieval period.

A large fragment of whetstone, which is probably early-medieval in date. Numberous whetstones made in this material have been found in the East Ridings of Yorkshire in Viking contexts. The stone from which the whetstone has been carved is a fine-grained Mica Schist, sourced in Scandinavia. The stone has been chipped and ground into the whetstone shape and has large chamfered edges. The chamfered edges are still very obvious. Weight: 94g.

A complete whetstone probably dating to the early-medieval period. The whetstone is rectilinear in plan and relatively square in section. One end narrows slightly, each end is angled slightly, parallel to each other. The stone is a fine-grained, micaceous rock, probably schistose in origin. There appears to be no garnet present or clear schistoze texture which has been clearly apparent in nearly all of the other whetstone seen through the Yorkshire FLO office.
The surface has badly damaged, most of the marks are relatively new which probably indicates plough damage. This whetstone pro…

A carved soapstone object, which could be a gaming piece of early-medieval to medieval date.
The piece is octagonal in shape with seven of the sides decorated with incised cross-hatching. The eighth side, most probably the front of the piece, is carved with a 'Gothic' archway flanked by pillars. The top and the base of the piece are flat with a circular hole running through the centre. The stone is a pale greyish-white in colour with flecks of red occurring in places. The piece is slightly cracked on three sides. The piece is 19.3mm tall and 23.4mm wide and weighs 20.8g.

These items form part of a collection of 60 sherds of Roman and Medieval pottery and other finds that were submitted for identification in November 2009.
The two whetstones that were submitted are, like the nails very hard to date without contextual information. Whetstones have been in use for many hundreds of years. On whetstone is perforated, probably for suspension; this practice was not common during the Roman period. These whetstones may date anywhere from the post Roman period (AD 410) into the post-medieval period.

An Early-Medieval/ Medieval (500-1500) Spindle whorl of Coppergate type A1 (Walton Rogers, 2007), with one flat and one domed face. It measures 34.95mm in diameter, stands 18.09mm tall and weighs 30.4g.
The circular central perforation measures 8.71mm diameter at the domed face and 10.07mm diameter on the flat face.
The material is probably stone, but also looks very like earthenware. It has hairline cracks (possibly decorative?) on the domed face, consisting of a concentric ring and five roughly-equidistant radiating lines on the sides.

An incomplete hone stone of uncertain date. It is formed from a grey schist and terminates in old breaks towards its base. The hone is triangular in form and section, with flattened and slightly rounded suspension end and flaring base. At the suspension end is a drilled central circular aperture that is slightly wider in diameter on one face than the other. The two wider faces of the hone demonstrate signs of use-wear and become substantially thinner towards the old breaks probably as a result of extended periods of usage. This object measures 42.99mm in length, 16.68mm in width, 9.3…

A whetstone or hone which is 117.3mm long, 52.7mm wide and 34.6mm thick. The stone is sub-rectangular in plan with rounded corners. It appears to be a water worn pebble which has not been deliberately shaped. One face has been used as a whetstone though. This face is very smooth and worn, but the other have not been used and are rougher. There is a semi-spherical hole in one side face of the stone, closer to one end. This appears to be natural as there are no striations within the hole to suggest deliberate working. It may be the result of an air bubble or pocket less durable material…

It is made from a brown hard mud or siltstone with fine grains and is smooth to touch. The sides of the hone have silvery inclusions and black markings that are not present on the front or back face. The hone tapers in thickness at one end and has a circular perforation (diameter is 5.5mm) that has been drilled from both faces. One face has much more wear than the other with worn grooves and marks. The surviving length is 90.8mm, the width is 33.3mm, the thickness is 20.…
