Very worn vessel fragment dating from the Roman (possibly) period, i.e. c. AD43-410. It is a body sherd from an unglazed vessel made from orangey-reddish fabric that was sand/grit-tempered. The outside of the vessel was decorated with an ornamental grooved band which was attached to the vessel separately. Due to the thickness and sturdiness of this band it is possible that it was used as a handle, similar to salt-glazed pot handles of the early modern age.

Bottom sherd of a colour-coated white earthenware vessel dating from the Roman period, i.e. c. AD43-410. Only the small pedestal foot remains and the colour-coating on the outside of the vessel is cracked and missing in parts. The pedestal foot was probably part of a reddish/blackish colour-coated Nene Valley ware beaker.

Very small piece of Roman Samian ware dating from the Roman period, i.e. AD43-410. The fragment comes from the rim of a plain vessel, possibly as shallow bowl, e.g. Dragendorff 32 or 40 which are very common amongst the Samian forms found in the North of Britain.

Base sherd of a Roman Samian ware dish or shallow bowl, probably dating from the earlier Roman period, i.e. c. AD43-200. The sherd comes from the raised pointed centrepart of the dish with the central raised point still visible at one edge (see image). The inside is plain, but the outside shows remains of a personalised graffito which was less skillfully etched into the surface of the bowl. The sherd probably comes from a Samian bowl type Dragendorff 18/31 or 15/31, both of which are common dishes or shallow bowls and have this typical raised domeshaped base.

Rim sherd of a shallow Samian ware bowl or plate dating from the early Roman period, probably AD43-200. The fragment is very small and worn and it is difficult to ascertain which Samian form it came from. It seems like the outmost part of the rim was turned inwards rather than outwards which would be very unusual. However, alternatively it could be part of the wall of a bowl of Curle 11 or 38 or possibly a mortarium form Curle 21. All of these forms have a plain hooked flange down the outside wall and it is possible that the fragment was part of that.

Large fragment of possible Roman gaming board made from baked clay, dating from c. AD43-410. The fragment is about 15mm thick and seems to have breaks all around the edges so that its original size must remain uncertain. The obverse shows three straight lines/grooves which meet at a right angle and seem to have formed at least six squares or rectangles. The reverse does not show any decoration or markings except for one diagonal groove which might, however, be part of the break. All broken edges are very worn due to the ground in which the artefact was found in. The identification of t…

Body sherd of a large coarseware vessel, probably dating from the Roman period, i.e. c. AD43-410. The sherd is of larger size and comparatively thick suggesting it came from a bigger vessel such as an amphora or a bigger flagon. However, the sherd does not show many distinguishing features and it is very difficult to be certain what kind of vessel it came from. It was almost certainly a larger coarseware/kitchenware vessel made from light red/orangey fabric that was sand-tempered with smaller gritty inclusions.

Wall sherd of beige earthenware vessel dating from the late medieval or early post-medieval period, i.e. c. AD1400-1600. The breaks of the sherd are quite worn, but it probably comes from the body/base of the vessel. However, although it is quite substantial, it is difficult to ascertain what kind of vessel it was part of. Judging from the sherd, the vessel was made from green-glazed beige earthenware that was tempered with with gritty/sandy inclusions. It seems that only the outside was glazed, the glaze still being retained on some smaller patches on the surface. The glaze had taken …

Body sherd of a probably unglazed beige earthenware vessel dating from the late medieval or early post-medieval period, i.e. c.AD1400-1600. Judging from the side and thickness of the rim, the sherd probably came from a wide/thick-rimmed plate or shallow bowl which could have been used for, e.g. service fruit. The vessel was made from sandy beige fabric and was probably sand- or grit-tempered. It looks unglazed in general, but there might possibly some traces of light-green glaze left on the outside, under the rim. Although this would be a logical place to retain any trace of glazing, g

Long, narrow rim sherd of a vessel dating from the later medieval period, i.e. c. 15th-17th century. The sherd probably came from a shallow bowl or flagon with a wide, angular, thick-lipped rim. The vessel was made from unglazed beige/cream-coloured earthenware with sandy inclusions. It probably was sand-tempered and the fabric looks comparatively fine.

Small wall sherd of brown glazed red earthenware vessel, probably dating from the late medieval or early post-medieval period, i.e. AD1600-1800. The curvature of the sherd suggests that it came from a plate or shallow bowl. The underside/reverse is unglazed and brush strokes suggest that it was only covered by a reddish slip which in some parts already started flaking off. The top/inside/obverse is was decorated with a red and white slip and then glazed so that the decorative slip now shows up as dark brown background with a bright white/cream pattern in the foreground. Several fragments of building material (c. 15 pieces) dating from the Roman period, i.e. c. AD43-410. All pieces are made from a sandy, bright orange-reddish fabric and look and feel very worn and abraded, probably because of the extended period they have been on the beach. The fragments are probably parts of bricks, wall, floor- and roofing tiles, the largest fragment (see close-up) almost certainly being a fragment of a large Roman roof tile.

Worn fragment of Samian ware vessel dating from the Roman period, ie. c. AD43-410, most likely 2nd century. Undecorated body sherd made from reddish frabic with sandy inclusions and most of the shiny red slip still present. Sherd comes from upper part of the vessel's body as a fragmentary rim still remains. Possibly part of a flat dish.

Large fragment of a vessel dating from the late medieval, post-medieval or early modern period, i.e. c. 1600-1900. the sherd is very worn and weathered, but it seems to have been part of a green-glazed red earthenware jug or pot. However, the find comes from near a river and the greenish residue on the surface could be erosion/river products rather than eroded glaze. In that case, a more recent date seems more likely.

Small fragment of Samian ware vessel dating from the Roman period, i.e. c. AD43-410. Rim sherd made from sand tempered reddish fabric with (very faint) some of the shiny red slip still present on the obverse. It may have been part of a broad-rimmed flat dish or plate. These vessels sometimes have moulded decoration on the upper side of the rim, but this sherd is extremely weathered and any additional decoration would have been worn away.

Large fragment of Samian ware vessel dating from the Roman period, i.e. c. AD43-410. Probably 2nd century. Large bottom sherd with much of the pedestal foot ring still remaining. Probably part of a bowl of type Dragendorff 37, the commonest type of Roman Samian ware in Britain at the time. The vessel was made from sand-tempered reddish fabric with a shiny red slip which is still present on the obverse and reverse. The sherd does not display any decoration except a circle of roulette decoration on the inside (see image).
