An incomplete Roman bone hair pin dating to c.  AD 50 - 250 (cf. Greep type A2.2 / Crummy type 2). The terminal has broken at a ridged collar, but was possibly conical (see LON-03A984, LON-77DEB3 and LON-68D0FE etc). The shaft has a circular cross section tapering to a triangular point.

An almost complete post medieval bone toilet implement dating to the 16th century, possibly an ear scoop dating to c. AD 1550 - 1650. It has been carved from a single small animal bone, with the wide end formed into a small scoop above two curved indents forming shoulders. This is  cut into the main stem on either side, and the other narrower end formed into a point, again with two smaller curved indents below it. The general condition is good with slight chipping along the edges. Length 73.2 mm, width 9.7 mm, thickness 4.6 mm and weight 2.28 g.

Oyster shell. The bottom half of an edible oyster shell. A seafood diet was introduced or expanded under Roman rule, when British oysters acquired an empire-wide reputation. Oysters remained as a common foodstuff into the early post-medieval period, their availability probably only declining with environmental degradation in industrial times – though Viking Age York contrived to pollute its waterways to an extent which altered the local faunal range significantly. A worked bone probable weft beater (or pin beater) of Early Medieval to Medieval date, about AD 700 - 1200, or another similar pointed tool such as a stylus. It is a straight piece of bone, sub-rectangular in plan and oval in cross-section. One end is a worn break. The other end tapers to a blunt central point. An incomplete Post Medieval ivory knife handle dating from AD 1768. The remaining knife consists of the two scales from a scale tang 'pistol grip' knife. The scales have eight iron rivets securing the handle to the scale tang. Both sides are decorated with inlayed silver annulets. The shaft has a circular cross-section and tapers towards the tip, which is socketed to accommodate the iron tip.
