An incomplete Prehistoric, probably Mesolithic - Neolithic bone point or awl. The bone has been carefully worked to create an D-shaped cross-section shaft that tapers gradually into a point. The shaft flattens from its mid-point towards the opposite end, which is now damaged. It appears that this end of the tool would have been rounded off, and not continued into another point (as encountered in Saxon double-ended points). The object has acquired a dark brown-black patina. The surface is covered by linear unidirectional striations and shelving-effect termination marks created by scrap…

An incomplete Roman to Post Medieval cuboid bone die with irregular size faces (2 and 4 smaller than the rest), facetted edges and rounded corners. The die was manufactured by cutting a section from the shaft of a long-bone and stopping up the medullary cavity with two bone plugs to face 4 (still in situ) and face 3 (lost in antiquity). The numbers are in negative relief and indicated by double ring and dot marks, positioned in a regular layout, so the opposite sides add up to 7, and in an arrangement known as Potter's variant 1. The object consists of the lower limb bone of a mammal (perhaps a vestigial equid finger) which has been worked into a tapering point with a roughly triangular cross section. The wider end of the bone is smooth and worn, perhaps from usage as an awl. The tip is broken off. The bone implement is smooth and shiny in places, suggesting some age, but closer dating is difficult. It has darker areas of discolouration, probably through contact with the soil.
