An unidentified object, possibly a tool or decorative object which has been fashioned out of a section of deer antler. The antler, circular in cross section, has a slight curve to it. To one end, the honeycomb bone-like tissue has been removed and a sub-spherical piece of lead has been forcefully inserted, cracking the surrounding antler. This piece of lead protrudes from the antler. On closer inspection it appears that a glue or expanding foam has been used to fix the lead into place, it is not possible to say if this adhesive was a later addition (potentially a makeshift r…

A small fragment of worked bone or antler comprising a rounded terminal with a drilled hole through it. The cross section is flat and lenticular with rounded edges; the hole is around 3.3mm in diameter and has been drilled from both sides. The object has a finely polished surface and was probably the tip of a handle for a brush or other small personal item, which was intended to be suspended. The dating is uncertain, but based on the preservation a late post-medieval to modern date is proposed.

Incomplete bone object decorated with ring and dot decoration on both sides. Object is a rectangular plaque of bone with two broken protrusions reminiscent of a broken buckle frame on one of the short edges, the other short edge is damaged but may have had something similar. It is decorated both front and back with ring and dot decoration that is identical on both sides. The bone is convex in section. It has taken on a light brown patination and has a hairline crack running down the length of it. This is very similar to SF9199 on the PAS database and to the object in Margeson 1993, no…

A medieval ivory fragment of a socketed implement handle, probably dating 12th-15th century. This fragment includes longitudinal section of the handle with part of the decorative terminal and it provides approximately half of the cross-section. The surviving section of the handle reveals the handle has an oval cross-section with a flattened upper and lower surface. The two sides of the handle are decorated with the same pattern but the decoration does not extend over the upper surface which is plain. The decoration comprises a transverse band of two parallel lines then a row of ri…

A bone probably post-medieval (AD c.1500-c.1800) possible handle from an unidentified object. Overall, the object is 45.2mm long and 11.8mm in diameter. It weighs 4.82g. The object is sub-cylindrical. It has a rounded terminal and then narrows, expands, narrows and expands along its length, becoming narrower overall (9.9mm in diameter) at the other terminal. The narrower terminal has two semi-circular incisions at its end, but is otherwise rounded like the other terminal. These incisions along with the shape of the object suggest that this was a handle for an implement, perhaps a smal…

Unidentified object of animal bone with a hollowed out interior and with a neatly drilled, straight-sided hole near one end. Both ends have been trimmed. There is some similarity to a skate (most commonly found in Middle Saxon to medieval contexts in Britain), but there is no sign of wear and both broad faces are convex. The condition is quite fresh, and the object is probably post-medieval. Length 197mm. Width 50mm. Thickness 37.5mm. Hole diameter 10mm.

An unidentified object of uncertain date. The object is formed from a butchered section of animal skeletal material, probably a long bone. It is circular in plan with slightly angled sides and is undecorated. The small size of the object combined with a lack of decoration makes it difficult to attribute a function or date. It is possible that the object served as a jewellery item or dress accessory such as a bead and the colouration and condition suggests a fairly recent date though this cannot be confirmed. The object is 19.3mm in diameter, 1.8mm wide, 3.1mm thick and weighs 1.4g.

Possibly the handle from a weaving tool such as a long handled comb or weaving batten. The bone, probably a rib, has been worked to form a rounded end which appears to be slightly chamfered. The discolouration suggests it has been burnt at some stage. A weaving batten PAS record LON-7078E7 shows similarities and is dated as Early Medieval. This example however was excavated from an Iron Age pit. A similar shaped object is illustrated in MacGregor (1985: 186 fig 101). Devizes Museum holds many examples of Iron Age weaving combs from the early Iron Age settlement at All Cannings Cross F…
